Drunkest driver ever jailed for Norwich death

Malcolm Waite mounted the pavement in his Lexus RX SUV while travelling at speed, knocking down two – a 16-year-old girl and 20-year-old Fenella Hawes, who died at the scene.

Ms Hawes and the teenage girl – who suffered cuts and bruising – had been walking home together after work when Waite hit them along the A149 Wayford Road in Stalham, Norwich, on July 31. Local media reported the 20-year-old had been carrying flowers.

Police bodycam footage shows the moment a slurring Waite, sat next to a bottle of vodka, was arrested after the smash.

Waite, 68, was jailed for eight years after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving at Norwich Crown Court last week.

He was also disqualified from driving for another seven years and must take a driving test before he can get behind the wheel again.

  1. This is why I cant stand the law in this country

This man was almost SIX times over the drink/drive limit, he kills a young lady due to this fact and is given 8 years, which means he'll do less than 4…ARE YOU TAKING THE P*SS??

I mean for real, the British law is A FU*KING JOKE

  2. We need to rethink charges when it comes to drink drivers killing people. It could almost be called murder as you are knowingly driving with a decreased awareness. Ok. It's not premeditated but it definitely deserves more prison time than what is recommended now. A tariff lower than murder but more than manslaughter would be a good starting point I think.

  3. God bless the families who have lost loved ones because of this sad pisshead the reason I say this is because I was like him many years ago and I caused my family and myself sooo much heartache I was banned more than I had a legal licence to drive so then I drove banned anyway after 1 disqualfied driving ban and 4 drunk driving bans I eventually found an adult brain im so ashamed of what I have done but luckily I have never injured or killed anyone so I have been on the probation service and the police drunk driving courses and for the last 11 years I have held a clean licence which im very proud of my wife passed away at 46 yrs old with bowl cancer she was a nurse and my son died at 22yrs old in a motorbike accident what I would love to do and at the time I did ask the probation and police people involved if I could attend in my own time without payment and speak to people who have been in my position just like ex drug addicts talk to new addicts and it just fell on deaf ears I think because I was 1 of them that was it I was shunned anyway I am so ashamed of my past but would love the chance to help others to stop this killing by car as it really is murder by car
