Do Cities Really Need All These Cars? – SOME MORE NEWS

Hi. On today’s episode, we look at how the U.S. became so car-centric, why more walkable cities are probably the way to go, and what we can do to loosen the car industry’s mechanical grip on our urban planning. Plus, the cars in Pixar’s “Cars” have to eat and go to the bathroom. How does that work?

  1. When I (ugly 72y/old bloke) walk our little dog, complete strangers stop me to chat, generally for 20 minutes, while motorists stutter along alert to the threat of a road-rage incident, & oblivious to the world.
To be fair though, I do get a lot of lovely waves & smiles from ladies, Mums & kids as they drive by.
If people could spare a moment to step away from their cars & make connections, the world would be a better place.

  2. I am from Russia, the city of Novoshakhtinsk, and there is no transport here except minibuses, which are constantly filled, and motorists generally do not care about traffic rules.

  3. I spend time between Taiwan and Japan, but live in Canada. I notice a major difference in both countries – far more bicycles in Osaka, and at least 1 moped per family (say what you will about the pollution, there are cleaner two-wheeled vehicles) in Taipei. And many areas are walkable. You can fit far more mopeds in the space a car would take up on the road, with less traffic jams. Reduction of car usage is attainable.

  4. Cars and freedom

Funny thing is, Germany is also a car country (I'm pretty sure the reason our rail system is failing rapidly and we keep moving our climate goals back is because of all the fun car manufacturers), but we still manage to have walkable cities. You can (and should for the sake of your sanity) leave your car at home in Berlin, for example. I live in a smaller town where cars are entirely unnecessary unless you need them for your job or want to transport something that doesn't fit in a bike trailer.
Of course, the more rural it gets the more impossible living without cars becomes, with the situation getting worse every year with bus lines shutting down and inter city rail closing down stops or even if they don't, being too unreliable for anyone to get to appointments or work on time more than once or twice a month.

Anyway I'm sure the USA can eventually reach our shitty standard! I have faith in you guys doing the absolute minimum!

(also in my town everyone is cycling which I'm sure has a very positive impact on everyone's health, especially seniors like my apparently invincible grandfather. even one of my neighbors who has four cars just because he likes cars cycles all the time)

  5. I have almost always lived rural and anything more dense than small town is deeply uncomfortable to me
My few trips on buses have always been anxiety ridden messes and I would only have more reason to avoid cities should these changes actually happen

  6. No, road-rages and sh**tings have nothing to do with me being separated from other human beings in my car. But has something to to with crazy self-entitled people under stress when someone does not give them way, especially when they brake the rules. And I pity the fool who thinks about status, but it's not cars what turns people into snobs

  7. Thanks so much for this guys the word needs to get out there. Over the years i've gotten sick of car-dependency & how it can limit someone's income factoring in to how some are in a cycle of poverty. Found the NotjustBikes channel a while ago & am full on with the idea of a more walkable city where something that looses value the second it moves off a lot or causes financial hardship due to its price tag after interest & upkeep, just isn't 100% needed at all times.
Frequent car breakdown headaches got some of us looking at the Amish like 'I need to get in on that buggy situation bc this shit isn't working.'🤣

  8. In Some Completely Unrelated News, my boyfriend and I just adopted four degus and we've decided to name them Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, Seth Meyers, and–wait for it–Cody Johnston. You've clearly made it to the big leagues when two people spontaneously agree to name a pet after you!

  9. Why are you acting like the people who shoot guns out of cars aren't just insane people who likely would have killed someone regardless of the person being in a car.

  10. I'd rather have a car than to ride on government transit. I was born in Chicago and have ridden the bus and the L train many, many times. If you're against irrationally against cars, chronically wrong about how the world works, getting stabbed, and watching the homeless shamelessly piss themselves in front of everyone, this video is for you.

  11. ya know, as someone who's grown up as a car enthusiast, greatly enjoying driving and going to the track and all that, wrenching on stuff, making friends bonding over a mutual enjoyment of various car shit, I fuckin hate how MANDATORY cars are to our existence in the US. Yeah, I love mine, but it pisses me the hell off that I HAVE to own one to get groceries! I wish I could walk to the corner store for some eggs instead of needing to drive TWENTY MINUTES to the nearest grocery! It's asinine! Let me live somewhere that I can drop the top and have a good time when I want, and still be able to walk to the store to get my required food to survive! 🙁

PS: fuck everyone in an SUV ❤
