Discussion on the spate of shootings in taverns

Tavern shootings have become one of the latest trends in criminality facing South African communities. Dozens of people have died in a spate of mass shootings in taverns around the country.

Last weekend, two people died and 14 were wounded in a shooting that took place at Kwanyamazane, in Mpumalanga. Six men were also killed and one injured in Daveyton in Gauteng when attackers opened fire on patrons seated outside a tavern on Saturday.

The National Liquor Traders is calling on the police and other law enforcement agencies to prioritise dealing with this scourge.

Professor Nirmala Gopal, an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminology at the University of KwaZulu Natal, and the Convener of the National Liquor Traders Lucky Ntimane join the discussion.

  1. Please bring back the death penalty. The criminals cost the government too much money to be prisoned. They will keep on killing innocent people because they know they will come out at a certain time. If they know they will be hanged they will think twice before murdering someone.
    PLEASE CHANGE THE LAW.
