Did HBO Just Cancel These Two Game of Thrones Prequel Shows?

So it looks like we’ may not be getting some of the spin offs that HBO was looking to make. A company called Startling who produced Game of Thrones, House of the Dragons and more, had on their website a list of shows that they were actively involved with and we now see that Nine Voyages of the Sea Snake and Ten Thousand Ships are no longer listed as being in active development. But of course this doesn’t mean that all of the spin offs are lost, as they are still going to go forward with the Dunk & Egg series.

▬ Information ▬
House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal for HBO. It is a prequel to the television series Game of Thrones and is based on Martin’s 2018 novel Fire & Blood. Set two hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to the Targaryen civil war, known as the “Dance of the Dragons”, and the war itself. The main contenders are Houses Targaryen, Hightower, Stark, Baratheon, Arryn and Velaryon.

Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created for HBO by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Based on the fantasy novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. The series is set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, and interweaves several plot lines with a large ensemble cast. The first narrative arc follows a civil conflict among several noble houses for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms; the second covers the attempts to reclaim the throne by the exiled last scion of the realm’s deposed ruling dynasty; the third chronicles the rising threat of the impending winter and the legendary creatures and fierce peoples of the North.

  1. of course they're never going to make "Dunk and Egg" the casual fans won't have it, they just wanna see tits and dragons they don't care about dialogue or a good story. You know, filthy casuals who think RoP was a masterpiece and only hate GoT season 8 because their beloved Dany turned out to be an evil bitch

  2. So the only asoiaf series coming up is Dunk & Egg?

Does that mean that all of that talk about a Jon Snow show or limited series is no more or never was?

  3. I wasn't hyped for these shows. No more than I was hyped for the Long Night. And I think they cancelled them for the same reason they cancelled the Long Night – there is not enough material and the stories are detached from the main saga.

I guess, I would like to see Blackfyre Rebellion and Dunk and Egg prequel. Dunk and Egg story is still unfinished though. And it will likely remain that way, unfortunately.

As for the other prequel shows, well, to be honest, HOTD is nowhere near the quality of the first seasons of GOT (though it is far superior than the last seasons). I don't blame showrunners – the original material is just not that good. And the showrunners were struggling with this story, and they will struggle even more with what comes next. Dance of dragons is really off-putting and there are so many battles. Do they even have budget for all this battles? And CGI dragons?

  4. The big advantage of making a TV show from Dunk&Egg: these are actual well-written stories by a yet-undistracted GRRM which they can use to make a nice script, not some high-level "history book" by an already-distracted GRRM which requires mediocre show-runners to fill the huge gaps.
The big disadvantage of Dunk&Egg: no dragons. 😛

  5. I wasn’t too interested in 10000 ships or the sea snake. They barely have anything written about them and we’ve seen what happens when people try to make stuff up with George’s work

  6. chances we get something on Aegon conquering Westeros? seems like a good route for HBO to go with HOTD fresh in everyones minds. would be awesome to see a 2 or 3 season series with the conquest, then Maegor, and finally ending at the later years of Jaehaerys. preferably between the seasons of HOTD. probably just wishful thinking on my part.
