Hey Shelab, it looks like the ultimate staff requires more gems than what you saw initially; so you may need to check with the Wisp Mother again and scroll down, just to make sure you have everything before trying to upgrade your staff (especially since I get the feeling that you'll actually need at least one of every polished gem to make it, but that might also work well for your "refine every gem quest").

    As for the thorny vines covering up those jump pads, I'm pretty sure all you have to do is just hit them with your staff (i.e. just the regular attack, not your magic spells).
