I think we believe the tank is not dead because the West has never encountered anything remotely equivalent to our lever of technology, doctrine, or tactics. No one has Javelin-equivalents, and Abrams have never fought under contested skies with the enemy having drones up there ready to blow them up. While I don't think tanks will be gone, anyone who thinks we can still use the same armored doctrine as we had in the 90s is utterly delusional.
Also, it's worth noting that the accuracy of artillery today has a lot to do with real-time drone feeds.
I am shocked that you contradict the well known military expert Elon Musk 😮.
He would do better by designing an electric tank, methinks,
I think that it has become clear that in order to carry out a successful military offensive, one needs combined operations. That implies, among other things air superiority. Which in turn means taking out air defense systems. Even if you succeed in doing that (as the Azers did in Armenia) there still are the manpads like stingers.
I think what actually has become clear is that my beloved A10 Warthog really is obsolete now.
Why do Russian forces make the same mistakes over and over again (don't get me wrong, I sincerely hope they will keep doing that)?
I think it is because Russian forces are devided, Wagner and other PMAs, the LRP and DRP, regular Army, Spetznaz, etc etc. They appear to be more in competition with eachother than cooperating with eachother. Why weren't the Tatars told they should not venture in the Vuhledar minefields? Because there is no cooperation. Sometimes it looks as if Russia is looking to get rid of its 'undesirables', like prisoners or ethnic minorities (the latter would be a genocidal war crime by itself).
Oops, I forgot: excellent video.
Superb video! Thank you, Simon (and the team)!
I just find it hilarious how the West has been saying that Russia has lost so many tanks, and how it has to use old tanks, I mean damn if it is true that Russia has lost as many tanks as the West claims, how is it possible that this war is not over yet? Ukraine would have conquered Russia itself… 😂 😂
The era of the russian tank has ended.
I know next to nothing about tank defensive utility but I’m pretty sure a top mounted trophy system would help negate the drone strikes to some degree, no?
It’s amazing we can all see the problems with the Russians battle plan tanks aren’t dead the way they are used by Russia is
The Russians made the same stupid mistake during the First Chechnya War. My 12 year old son has played enough RTS video games to never send a bunch of tanks out by themselves without aircraft/infantry to protect them, and the tanks to protect them. I could understand an initial ignorance at the beginning of the Ukraine War, but to consistently make the same mistake over and over is just crazy. Combined with Russia’s laughable war-logistics ability this is just a disaster for the Russians and an absolute miracle to the Ukrainian military. I’m sure there are a ton of other factors, but my uneducated opinion is that the Ukrainians are lucky as hell that Putin didn’t hire my 12 year old son to advise on combined arms fast-maneuver warfare lol!
Hi Simon, so your videos are being screend by 'the community', eh? We''l I don't want to give anymore info to Google than necessary, so that's me off this channel. Good luck with the policing nanny state that is known as G-Nanny!
Just subscribed love your channel pls if the videos could be 1 hour long that would be a dream come true
Saying tanks are useless because they get destroyed, so does that mean infantry are useless because they're allergic to bullets?
All hail the Algorithm! The creator of reality!
Task and purpose has a great video explaining the failures, especially what happened in vulhedar, but is basically the fact that there are multiple groups fighting for Russia ( like Wagner), all of them trying to get the most political power from military victories, fighting separately and even competing for results, not collaborating.
What I found slightly funny is that you quoted a former USMC Colonel giving good pointers when it comes tanks. And yet the USMC is getting rid of all of their MBT's. Though as someone that was in the US Army, that considers Marines to be crayon eaters. In my opinion they have good choices of the last yew decades. They got rid of their MBT's for…. Nothing. And they replaced their Squad Automatic Weapon(M249) for what is literally an M4 with an ACOG on it. It is like the Marines do not understand suppressive fire. And I think the reason for all these changes is people getting into high ranks believing in myths of their certain branch and wanting to emulate those myths. The Army also has the same problem at times.
The best thing about the Russian invasion is how it is a master class on what not to do and an advanced course in how to lose a war. Stalin learned after the Winter War to let the generals lead and promote by merit – in a few months. Putin hasn't learned that after over a year. Good thing for Ukraine he's such an idiot in military matters. He might be a good spy and a great politician, but he is the worst type of general.
Tanks are like the medieval knights on the battlefields of early modern times..
You can bleed an enemy with anti tank weapons but if you want to retake ground from a force with enemy armour you need to have armour of your own supported artillery and air support for best results. When you're building an army you need to consider what you want it to be able to do. If you're not projecting power you don't need an aircraft carrier. If you're acting as a peace keeping or anti insurgency force you don't need an armoured fist capable of large scale breakthroughs. This war has been a great sales opportunity for the Abrams X and panther programs as it's shown the need for active protection and hard kill systems for tanks in a modern near peer conflict
