Dan Lanning can make a statement for Oregon Football v Texas Tech | Oregon Ducks Podcast

The matchup with Texas Tech on Saturday once looked like it could be a top 25 matchup before the season began, but after the Red Raiders’ loss to Wyoming that won’t happen. That opens the door for the Oregon defense to make its first big statement in 2023.

On today’s episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin takes an early look at the matchup in Lubbock taking place this Saturday. He also goes into what to expect from the Ducks defensively based on what appears possible against this Texas Tech team as shown by Wyoming last week.

Some notable Ducks who have been injured are back at practice this week, which will affect Oregon’s rotations on both sides of the ball. Plus, a look at what Colorado’s week 1 success means for the college football world in the transfer portal era.

  1. I don't think there's ever been a bad episode. I always enjoy the show and hearing everyone's questions. This season is going to be something extra special not only for the Ducks, but for the final season of the PAC, and we saw it begin week 1. GO DUCKS!

  4. Colorado is great but they will run out of gas. They don't have the depth and with teams with better defenses, they will not have enough gas to overcome their defensive weaknesses. Six wins seems like a good number for them.

  5. If portal guys are more developed than high school recruits, doesn’t that mean that someone developed them?

My take from the Crème Boule Bowl was Kiki Alonso going horizontal for a big interception!

  6. 2014 rose bowl. So awesome to see live. One of the best games to be present at and watching Mariota torch Winston. 2020 Rose Bowl again was an awesome game beating Wisconsin. Great year in general in sports in 2019 and then covid had to hit and bring it all downhill from then

  7. Miami and Cristobal could not do it their first year. You have to have a brand name to be able to recruit. Deion will start getting some 4 and 5 stars all over the place now. He is a very good players coach. That will appeal to a lot of kids.

  8. Benson is doing great. Micah Pittman not so much. Unfortunately, Thornton did not get enough targets this last Saturday. Dollars did not shine against SC. Same for all those Nevada ex Oregon players.

  9. My wish list for the defense:

    1. No blown assignments
    2. No uncovered receivers
    3. Pressure on QB for longer developing pass plays – resulting in a few sacks
4 LInebackers flying to the ball
    5. Rotating in lots of players, especially the younger ones
    6. Third down "instant" pressure – sending lots of different blitzing packages – hair on fire
    7. No missed tackles
    8. Lots of forced punts, and then some good punt returns
    9. D to look fresh, fast and aggressive on every play
    10. No bad penalties on defense
    11. Picks along with dynamic runbacks and a few good blocks on said INT returns

  10. It's not possible for this to be a statement game. If we dominate Texas Tech the narrative will be Texas Tech lost to Wyoming, so Oregon isn't good, it's just that TT sucks. We'll have to dominate UW, UU, or USC before it's a statement game. Let's just enjoy each game and let the record and stats do their job over the course if a season.

  11. With Oregon so messed up, I don’t see how there could be a professional anything. There is not 1 safe place in Portland for practice. My opinion: Ducks will be drowned. No contest. Texas Tech doesn’t have 1/4 the stress to perform before anyone watching. Nothing to prove. Not so with Oregon.

  12. You may be correct. Texas Tech is NOT a team that (apparently from Saturdays result) has a strong ground game. Have stat's in front of me. Their lead RB, Cam'ron Valdez only had 20 yards on 6 carries. Tahj Brooks, only had 51 yards on 11 carries. Their WR Jerand Bradly only had 8 completions for 88 yards. When I saw these numbers, my first thought was they prefer going to the air and relying on Tyler to make completions to his WR's. So these are the names to look for on Saturday. Our Secondary is going to get tested. Same for our D-Line. I think they will have their work cut out for them. I really hope Burch can make Tylers day miserable. Their O-Line has some big dudes up front. And they are all practically from Texas. With the exception of their TE Jayden York at 250lb's, everyone else on that line is above 300 lb's. York is another dude to keep an eye on. And one other train of thought that came up (from Autzen Audible?) after PDX State: Couch Lanning, knowing that Texas Tech would be watching tape, Dan did not give his hand away as to who would start against T-T so as to throw off their game plans. As much as I would love to see Hurbert start, I think T-Ferg will start against T-T. But putting in some people that will not likely start against T-T, and cause a little confusion is a nice little strategy if you ask me. Makes me more impressed with Dan's way of thinking. Did not know (initially) that Noah was a bit dinged up, or any injury status. But if indeed Dan was thinking ahead to T-T planning, I'd say that is a smart move.
