Dale Jr's Take On Shane van Gisbergen's Historical Performance | Dale Jr Download

The Supercar Series in Australia is the closest style of driving to the NextGen car on the street course that you can find. Dale Jr discusses how the skills that Shane van Gisbergen gained from that series helped transfer over to the Chicago Street Course race.

  1. Anybody who has visited America knows how rare any other type of corner is on the road that isn't a tight 90deg cross intersection, when I drove across America I instantly understood why drag racing became a sport. The lack of variety in corners means many of their drivers didn't get the exposure to the variety our guys do as youngins. I don't know what the feed route for drivers is in America, Australia is most often gokarts, so you need a wealthy Dad, before gokarts many drivers came from farmland where the kids grew up driving old cars around the paddock and learn to drive at the perfect age, this can not be done on public roads, you are simply way to old to start driving at 16 and become a world class driver. The top people in any discipline started doing that thing when they were well under 10.

  2. TLDR – he would love to see SVG at a significant disadvantage, because he thinks he would be challenged but in an even fight any Top 10 aussie Supercars driver smokes a nascar driver.

  3. Exactly as Dale put it. The Supercar drivers are experienced street car racers so not surprised SVG did so well. Nascar needs to further embrace the street circuit approach, it will strengthen Nascars future both in US and internationally, bring it on! Also as an Aussie bring the Nascar drivers to Supercars … awesome prospect.

  4. I agree that most Supercar drivers would have done the same or similar at Chicago because of the car similarities and their street track experience. However, SVG is special. He has won races in rally cars and he won in an Asian Lemans race at the Bend having NEVER going in one.

  5. Wouldn't be great to see NASCAR and V8 supercars crossover NASCAR champ get drive at Bathurst and the supercar champ gets wildcard in NASCAR must be street race though lol .Shane or Aussie Motorsport fans would never put down or disrespect the skill of NASCAR drivers

  6. How much slop can American stock car racing take! SVG should've done very well as he did. Did not SVG have 12 lap fresher tires at the end in Chicago? Doesn't he race Stock cars on Street Courses for his career? Please already with the a$$ sucking nonsense! SVG did a great job racing the streets. He was on newer rubber on a joy ride. Marcus Ambrose would've absolutely loved having such a golden opportunity like Chicago. Y'all r having a totally ridiculous conversation.

  7. V8 Supercar drivers need to be respected for the insanely talented driver they are – Just like great dirt drivers translate well to NASCAR oval racing.

  8. You nailed it in regards to the level playing field, we weren't super shocked at the result here in Aus. You could even say Shane actually had an advantage given his experience with street circuits and the cars being so similar. I think in that trim the cup car had a bit over 500hp which would of been a little more manageable than a supercar on that track which only has one engine spec of a bit over 600hp.
None of us think Nascar drivers aren't good drivers or even that Shane is a god amongst men or anything. My first reaction was "Let's see him in an oval race before we got to excited"

  9. PS, too hard for NASCAR drivers to compete in Australia? How is it harder for NASCAR drivers than it was for SVG and all the other V8 Supercar drivers to gain their V8 Supercar racing licences? It's an even playing field. Love the circle wank by the USA pundits trying to explain away why antipodean drivers can just slot in and immediately start winning.

  10. It was pretty clear in the race that SVG had superior throttle control in the wet. These nascar guys are not used to wiping off so much speed into a corner then getting the power down again. Top ten Supercar drivers would all have done well in that car at that track in those conditions.

  11. The guy drove a great race but lets be honest here, Nascar shortened the race length AFTER some teams pitted and others stayed out on a different pit/tire strategy.

It did not hurt his chances for victory that the cars in front of him on a road course that he had to pass to get the victory were on 16 lap older tires.
A lot of people singing how historically great this guy is leave out those parts.

If the race had of been run full distance then the outcome very likely would not have been the same.
The guy had easily passed and had not led at all before when there were cars on equal rubber in front of him .

  12. With three V8 Supercars Championship wins (2016, 2021, 2022), 80 wins and 46 pole positions, van Gisbergen is the fourth most successful racing driver in the V8 Supercars Championship history. He has won the Bathurst 1000 twice, in 2020 and 2022, both times alongside Garth Tander.
Van Gisbergen also races in GT Racing, winning the 2016 Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour alongside Alvaro Parente and Jonathon Webb in the McLaren 650S GT3, winning the 2016 Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup, finishing 3rd overall in the 2016 Intercontinental GT Challenge and finishing in second place in the 2015 24 Hours of Daytona in the GTD class.
He and Paul Morris are the only drivers to have won all three major car racing events at Mount Panorama: the Bathurst 1000, Bathurst 6 Hour and Bathurst 12 Hour.
SVG can drive the wheels off of ANYTHING..
No-one says NASCAR aint the Big Boys, but SVG punches well above his weight in anything he drives..

  13. Reality? SVG did not go to Chicago and race NASCAR. NASCAR drivers went to Chicago and competed in a V8 Supercar style race. NASCAR drivers performed very well against a driver racing in street races he (SVG) is a 3-time champion in. There is no way SVG or any other V8 Supercar driver would ever think they could go to Daytona and dominate. Proof? Marcos Ambrose multi-V8 Supercar champion competed in NASCAR with very limited success. He did win at Sears Point but that was a road course! All good, looking forward to more "left &right" NASCAR races.

  14. Australian here saying hello. Things get heated at times of course but the good humour of US racing drivers has always impressed me. It's always felt like they know they're living a dream and are speaking publicly to people who love racing and chose to do it and watch it in their precious spare time.

It sounds like a few cogs are turning rather quickly in the US right now. I hope that results in more Americans out here running cars in our racing. You're all welcome, so long as you leave your beer at home.

  15. Paul Morris is a very switched on DUDE. He tried and failed to buy V8 Supercars and it would be a much better sport if he did. He and Russel Ingall have a youtube channel called the Enforcer and the Dude who as friends of Shane, will no doubt have a new vid up soon.

If anyone wants to know about Bathurst, look up Darryl Waltrip's lap of Bathurst. A must watch!

  16. I invite all our American brothers in motorsport to watch this years Bathurst. You'll love it. Six hundred miles of endurance racing that is really a non-stop sprint around a mountain course with death and destruction lurking around every corner. Google it.

  17. Shane is at the top of the local scene and deserved his success. There isn't much separating drivers across codes. I can see at time were Bathurst could be a truly international race AUS v US. I'm sure of this as the cars have become more uniform under their skins. BTW There is a Quad oval track at Calder Park in Victoria

  18. Intending no disrespect, I think we first need to acknowledge the simple ignorance of Chase Elliott's comment. It came out of the mouth of someone who didn't do well in the race and is likely as embarrassed as hell. Why is it not seen that way?

It is immaterial what Mr. van Gisbergen may or may not say about the skill level of NASCAR drivers. Anything and everything regarding the fineness and competence of all of the drivers was on display during the running of the Chicago race. The Chicago race was added to the schedule, what, well over a year ago? Longer??? That seems to have been plenty of time to pick up some street racing skills.

Mr. Elliott likely has access to an aircraft of some sort, and the money to afford a few days' worth of specialized training from a variety of instructors scattered across the globe. He knew that NASCAR races in the rain on road, and now street circuits. Did he seek that training? For example, I found a rally school in Southern California In less than five minutes on the internet. Lots of lefty-righty tight turns at various speeds. An attentive student driving on a low-traction surface would likely become more skillful at braking, more precise with their throttle application, and more nimble with the steering wheel. Those cars have more power from the engine than the tires can handle. Seems ideal…

This part may sound a little disrespectful but I’m confident that I’m simply speaking the truth. Young Mr. Elliott arrived with the advantages his dad and uncles didn't have when they started — they didn't have the fallback position that the 2nd generation enjoys. It seems that his dad would have likely said, “We’ll just have to try harder next time,” and then he would have. Instead, Chase sounded entitled and petulant. He didn’t win. Just suck it up and get better. To me, it seems that further discussion about his foolish comment is unnecessary.
