The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the U.S. has granted the Makah Tribe of Washington state the approval to harvest as many as 25 grey whales over the next 10 years.
Before any hunt starts, NOAA Fisheries and the Tribe must agree on the expedition, under the Whaling Convention Act, and the Tribe must apply for and receive a hunting permit.
As Kylie Stanton reports, the Makah Tribe says it’s an important part of their culture, but critics are questioning whether it’s really necessary.

This makes me sick. Where’s PETA when you need them! We has humans need evolve from this barbarism.
there is enough food, it's not like they need whale meat to survive….
if it's for ceremonial and keeping the tradition alive, one should be enough? why do they need up to 20+ whales?
Sooo unnecessary! No respect at all for nature and beauty. 😡
Wow, the righteous indigenous tribes in Washington State are showing their true colors. Since when does traditionally slaughter of innocent whales, trump the environmentalist's agenda to save the planet. Hopefully, Green Peace and others should be out there in full force, keeping the whales away from these predators!
I'm indigenous and this disgusts me. Traditional doesn't have to mean we're stuck in our ways. We've learned whales are intelligent and empathetic animals and they deserve our respect.
Sad
CHICKEN AND COW?!?
Sure they're using their traditional ways with their gas powered motors and their high powered rifles, oops I mean their traditional motorized boats and high powered rifles. Because you know they had high powered rifles and motorized boats 200 years ago.
Disgusting. That's like telling someone they can own slaves because they have a 250 year old contract.
It's been done for 1,500 years.
Only controversial because people have been brainwashed to hate natural food. These are the same people going after cows because they supposedly burp and fart too much lol🤡
"Don't Kill the Whale"-Yes-1978
Tribes need to evolve, this is idiotic ritual
I don't 100% agree with it. But hunting whales was important enough for them to put it in their treaty in 1855. Let them hunt.
Some things should stay in the past. . .doubt high powered modern rifles are part of traditional cultural history or calling back home on their cell phones
can view the 1999 hunt on youtube
not sure what the judge was thinking, again no backbone or common sense in leadership anymore -What a lot of double standards from stupid people who blindly flout cultural relativism
So much for saving the environment. No one is fooled with this mock 'hunt.' There's no meaning or value, just selfish expediency, using tradition to deploy as an excuse for cruel, entertaining activities, that probably don't even come close to the original purpose, practices, unfathomable hardships and necessities that were required in order to survive. It's disingenuous.
I'm indigenous of Canada leave the animals alone
They do not live from the forest neither from the sea anymore. They have Cars, boats and buy clothe like everyone else. what is the point now After so long this is just a sport. Where rich people will be able to join them for good money
Got to appease those still living 103,034 years ago.
A tradition is merely an excuse to be terrible.
These people are terrible.
Why would they allow anyone to hunt whales. LEAVE THEM ALONE. The wales are smarter than the people hunting them. Who were the nut jobs who autherized the killing of whales?
Just because the whaling hunt WAS /IS part of their culture practice…it does NOT MEAN that it SHOULD be ALLOWED…DISGUSTING….
SOME practices & cultural beliefs are barbaric…😡
Wonder how much of that whale will be sold quietly and no one will say a word about it. If they want to traditionally hunt a whale, do it the proper way. Don’t get towed in & out of harbour paddling only for a photo op, don’t use technology to find it, don’t use a firearm to kill it.
Wow, amazing, incredible, all the people who were white and lived in Ontario their entire lives in the other Global News video are now indigenous and live in BC. What fascinating fake lives.
Humans have lost their humanity!!
I'm Tulalip and we were with them for the last hunt, we didn't eat the thing, we made a massive mess on the beach and left it covered in empty 2 l soda bottles, mostly orange soda, I remember really distinctly. People didn't like it, they tried to eat it, even the elders didn't like it, and the young people? Certainly didn't! We didn't treat the animal with respect, we had stormy out there talking about how after 2 hours the whale turned and "gave itself" to us. Like no dude it's an animal and it wants to live. It doesn't have the higher brain function to say, oh, this is a spiritual practice and I will give myself to the people. It's an animal. That would be like chasing an elk for 2 hours and the elk lays down. It's a thing, humans have always been endurance hunters. We are the terminators of the animal world, we're not as fast, but we will follow you for days until you fall over. So I don't know why this is going to happen again, but when it happens we're going to go back to not doing it again for another 25 years because it's going to be a freaking disaster like it was last time. Do not let anybody tell you that the tribe needs to do this, we didn't, we don't, and we don't like whale! Nobody wanted to eat the freaking thing. I remember I was in school on the reservation at the time, just a kid, and I was the only kid out there who was against it and this was back when Snapple came in glass bottles? Bottles? And we had a machine school grounds? So they would get bottles, drink them all during lunch and then fling them at me during recess. There were weeks where I was just pelted with glass and my native teachers didn't do anything about it, it took the one white teacher on campus to say, hey, she can't be out here because she's being targeted with violence. I think all the native teachers basically just wanted me to learn my lesson and shut my mouth and I wasn't going to. And I won't this time either, I'm going to start speaking out against this and I'm going to bang the drum and try to remind everybody because we have pictures of last time, of what a disaster it was. There's a reason we haven't done it again. Clearly people have forgotten what that reason is. The reason is, it was a disaster and nobody wanted it. We are not the Inuit in Alaska, lettuce isn't $16 a head, we don't need to eat like that like the Inuit do, Just like last time we're not going to freaking eat it. Everybody's going to go have a little bite and try to wash the taste out with 2 gallons of freaking soda that we're all going to leave on the beach again and have to hire a group to come clean up after us. Just like last time. It sincerely makes me sick that ain't nobody in the tribe is going, oh hey remember last time we did this? Was it a good experience? Or was it a really really negative one? Because I guarantee you, I've got pictures myself, there were pictures in our paper uploaded digitally, there is no barrier for people to look up the results of our whale hunt 25 years ago. And they are choosing not to, and that makes me angry. What's going to make this time different? Nothing.
Leave the whale alone!!! Go catch fishes like normal humanbeing
Right now that whale they are going to kill is probably just swimming around minding its own majestic business. I wish they would decide to let it live.
This is shameful! Times have changed and there should be no whaling allowed. This tribe could hold some kind of ceremonial hunt without actually killing a whale. This basically says to every other country and people group on the planet that it's open season on whales and they will be wiped out. This tribe should be ashamed of themselves! Some groups in the world used to practice cannibalism. Should we allow that again because it is their heritage? Or slavery? What about that? This hunt must not be allowed to go ahead!
With traditional zodiacs and rifles
if something is endangered no one should be allowed to hunt them.
All any of us have when we are starting over in life is our past traditions, we start there AND EVOLVE. That is a process of RELATIONSHIPS. People who are serious about healing diet need to get serious about learning to relate to others who don't eat it because they do not know. Find common ground, and help them see. God bless you all.
Humans are killed everywhere and no one cares. Why should we care about whales 😮
Why native Americans can't decide by themselves but have to be decided by immigrants from other continents? Such a joke. God bless America.
