I used to think that colonizing Mars was a great idea and we should do it as soon as possible however as I look into it I’m starting to realize that it’s actually a very inconvenient idea and we would have no major advantages over just living in space if we were to colonize Mars the only advantage is if we could terraform Mars and develop an atmosphere similar to earth then it would be a lot more feasible to live there however without an atmosphere we are literally putting ourselves into more danger by living on the surface of the planet then we would be by living in orbit because of the intense dust storms that create lightning marsquakes and the fact that we would need still need to get off the planet.

So let’s focus our efforts on building an O’Neill cylinder instead this is a large space station that will allow us to breathe comfortably grow plants create cities and sustain 10s of thousands of people in a perfect environment with no ill effects of weather or natural disaster. This would not only be better for humanity but there would be far fewer challenges than terraforming and colonizing Mars Mars would be a great resource to utilize in the future for its minerals and chemical compounds but aside from that it’s basically useless to us considering we have a perfectly good planet to live on and the technology to make space living much more enjoyable

  1. Cause, that would make too much sense. We have billionaires that want to live on dead planets that I believe we lived on before but destroyed. I also believe we lived on Venus as well. It’s time we make what you said so we can live throughout space instead of one general planet that will soon die. Even our sun will burn out making Mars pointless to “fix” 😂

  2. We already have a perfectly habitable planet that costs nothing to get to because we’re already there. Why not just make earth the best planet it can be? We could terraform the sahara or make ocean settlements. Literally anything on our planet is gonna be cheaper than sending a ton of expensive fuel and materiels into a deadly vacuum. I like the idea of space mining but I like having gravity and a breathable atmosphere.

The first plan is to nuke mars and build factory’s or something shit to start a little global warming on mars and after that we need water due to the global warming after a couple billion years the ice will smelt to actually make water on mars and the we put some insects to take care for nature and shit where the soil wil appear and after that comes life on mars

  4. See this is what happens always once we lived in Venus we destroyed it got hot so moved on to earth and forefathers wanted us to live a simple life without technology. But see now what's happening we created it all again destroying earth and looking to move to Mars. What comes after?

  6. It will take Mars 50 to 100 million years to terraform, and that's with human intervention. Going there is just a waste of money, time and lives that will undoubtedly be lost in the process.

  7. I agree with your points that making attempts to build a sustainable habitat on mars is very difficult infact more difficult. However I think pretty all of them can be overcame. What I think will kill the idea of mars colonization is the low gravity. While we know the exact effects of weightlessness and we don’t know for certain what the long term effects of lower Martian gravity would be, we can assume bone loss, muscle loss would still happen. We don’t know how the lower gravity will develop the bone and muscle structure for a fetus and we don’t know if low gravity may increase birth defects and miscarriages. We also don’t know if someone born in Martian gravity can even survive earth gravity. So if we can’t reproduce mars as a alternative to earth wouldn’t work. Going to mars is still a great idea for research purposes and as a stop for further space exploration but as a habitat no.

It’s not a bad idea to go to other planets.. but we don’t have the technology for a mars colony… maybe in a few hundred years… but not now .. they’re better off trying a moon colony first imo .. because it’s closer… or even better… maybe they could try to settle the Sahara desert first for practice

  9. 1) Space habitats have access to far better resources than can be found on Mars, and which are far easier to get to/from. 1400 NEAs that are easier to get to/from than Mars. 400 easier than the Moon, 40 or so easier than Lunar orbit.
    The NEA fragment that hit Chelyabinsk in 2013 was denser with metals than Earth's crust 10km deep. Some meteorites are density 8+, greater than pure iron. King Tut's rust-proof meteoritic steel dagger is 6% cobalt.
    No mine on a planet or moon will ever work such materials.
    Other meteorites are like CC asteroids. Density <2, 40% ices: H2O, CH4, NH3, CO2, lots of stinky compounds like organic tarry stuff and lots of lighter minerals

    We've had people continuously on Antarctica for decades, but it is not a "colony" to which they'll retire or raise children.
    For anything more than a large permanent continuously inhabited research and exploration base down on Mars, prove that we can live long-term and stay healthy in low G.
    That's _proof_, not S.F., not wishes and hopes that the question goes away and try it and see, not maybe in the future biomechanically altering ourselves.
    Meawnile we know that
    a) humans have lived for weeks in a rotating reference frame
    b) animals raised in hypergravity in centrifuges are stronger, more healthy, and live longer than controls
    c) a marathon runner who constantly fights gravity will be expected to live longer and be more healthy than a couch potato.

    2) daylight time is a silly point to try to make. A space habitat can have anything from full-time continuous unlimited solar energy for electricity or industrial process heat, or 24 hour day/night.

    The first space habitat will probably be no more than a few days travel time from Earth.

    Long before we're ready for more than a large permanent human base on Mars, we'll be mining NEAs, and all questions of costs will go away.
    Not long after, we can find a metallic asteroid to push into Mars orbit within ≈20 years during which we've built up enough industrial infrastructure in Mars orbit to build a "Stanford Torus" habitat in Mars orbit for virtually Earth-like conditions within a few hours travel time to anywhere on Mars.

    The best long-term survival insurance for Earth is
    d) getting our heaviest polluting industries off-planet and getting a budget and tool-kit to survive things like +6°C warming or an ice age or Yellowstone
    e) gaining control over the ecliptic. The NEAs most likely to hit us are also the ones which are easiest to reach.
    We know of ≈10k+ Apollo group NEAs. The little one at Chelyabinsk was too small for detection in most cases and there will be far more of them.

    Looking for signs of past and present life on Mars is arguably the biggest scientific task facing us and if it's there will be the greatest scientific discovery of all time.
    Scientific study of Mars is not contingent on a "Colony" down on the planet, but a continuous human presence.
    How to pay for it, beyond begging congress and changing presidential administrations to bot cut it? Mining of NEAs. Any time any question of cost or pay-off of anything in space comes up, nothing makes sense other than NEA metals.
    Note that we are talking about time-scales of making cities or a "colony" on Mars or in space, so getting solid, heavily influential returns from NEA mining is not at all out of the question of near-term efforts (≈25 years outlook)
    Long term survival of humanity and our civilization: See planetary defense and taming the ecliptic and NEAs.

    Conditions on a "Stanford Torus" space habitat can be virtually Earth-like. Per the '70s NASA Ames / Stanford space industrialization & colonization studies, no new inventions needed to mining moons and asteroids and to build for virtually Earth like conditions anywhere in space where there are or to which we bring materials.
    In just the Inner Solar system small bodies, there are materials to build habs for hundreds of times the Earth's land-surface, in better conditions than you'll get down on any other body, including better than much of Earth. in the main Belt, thousands of times, and the "habitable zone" around the Sun goes out into nearby interstellar space.

  10. To give breathable atmosphere to mars all you need is heat' heat will melt the ice and you get heat by melting the surface after that add bacteria and plant into the water and after a couple of decades mars is now habitable and then just add a artificial magnetic sphere and boom 🌎

  11. I think it's a good idea. I mean the human species would become interplanetary species. And we now know there are other earth like planets out there. Especially ones in the Goldilock Inhabital Zones. Mars is a stepping stone for the human race. Living on Mars will have challenges. Yet we can meet those challenges by working together. I for one dislike the idea living on a space station. You can't do a whole lot of exploration living in just a space station. Talk about claustrophobia, that's no joke nor it's a pun. Claustrophobia living in only just a space station alone is asking for anxiety to go through the roof.

  13. You are speaking about being on mars day 1 … but humans wants to create the echo system on that planet … it means a lot of work and many years so that at the end of it you can call it “the era of : mars reborn” where there are trees and plants and humans can live without space suits etc
