CITY WALK – SHANGHAI – Xinchang Ancient Town – 4k @60

Located in Shanghai’s Pudong District, Xinchang Ancient Town is a small water town with more than 800 years history. In ancient times, it was a prosperous salt market. Today, there are still a large number of Ming and Qing dynasty structures. Set roughly 40 kilometers from central Shanghai, Xinchang Ancient Town is quieter and less sophisticated than other ancient towns in Shanghai. It has not been over-commercialized and you can still feel the lively atmosphere here. Fans of the film “Lust Caution” will recognize the town as the setting for many of the film’s outdoor scenes.

  1. This was one of Shanghai's 'ancient' spots inaccessible to us foreigners back in '89 when I worked there; i was much younger then, and single. Then, it was the Shanghai frozen the way it was in 1949, so the locals themselves would tell me. And living aning them, albeit in better accommodations, i believed them.

Shanghai, and China as a whole, as a country, as a people, has always been dear to me. I trace my ancestry to Nanking. So, i just had to touch my roots if I had to find work to do it, and I did.

My memories of Shanghai are enlivened by what you shared in this video; how I might have loved chatting with the local, with anyone, over tea at those well appointed tables!

It didn't take any effort to persuade my wife to make China first foreign tour: the World Expo. And what a pleasant shock it was for me to find Shanghai far different to the city I left shortly before the Tiananmen uncertainties.

I had a life's worth of treasurable memories of my brief stint there: the place, the people, the food, culture, history, etc.

Thank you so much for a very well done, delicate glimpse into this side of the city i loved. I will certainly visit Xinchang should i be able to visit Shanghai again.

Btw, 'Bund Beats' makes me relive some of my days off when I'd bike from Jinan to the Bund & relish sharing conversational English with just about anyone eager to learn the language as an alternatove to their 2nd language, Russian. As it turned out, they simply were preparing for westernization, the World Expo, & the Beijing Olympics.

But enough! I look forward to seeing more, experiencing more, if vicariously, through your videos. And Thank Tou for listening.
