Chinese X79 Motherboard To The Rescue (Again)!

“Was I a good CPU?” The AMD FX-8350, the budget king of CPUs back in 2012, has not aged well over the last 11 years. But don’t throw out that old gaming rig just yet! If you’ve got working storage, memory and a power supply, you can rebuild it faster than ever before. With a Chinese X79 Motherboard and Xeon CPU of course!

But first… What am I drinking???

The Rogue Dead Guy Ale is a staple of craft beer drinkers the world over, and now it comes in IPA form! The Rogue Dead Guy IPA clocks in at 7.0%, and might just be the best beer in the series!

  1. My brother still has an FX Chip in the PC he uses for college. It was the family PC bought in 2011 and had a 4100 with no gpu in it. When I came across some FX parts for a few bucks I looked into what would fit and what wouldn't and the board only supported the FX6300 so I gave him that. The 8 Module chips wouldn't work and it took me a long time to actually find a decently priced board for the 8350 I had. Then I had to put in a GPU, because the graphics on the motherboard chipset were to bad to run his graphical calculator software. I had a GT630 and gave him that. I could upgrade his PC more but the budget is basically 0€ or whatever my mom gives me because he doesn't want to pay anything if he can just aswell take mym moms Laptop for free.

  2. These systems were becoming less viable because the mainboard price was high. But with the price you have been able to fetch, there is a use case yet. Can the price be sustained?

From my experience with these AMD systems, i wouldn't be entirely surprised if it ran just fine reassembled on a test stand. These mainboards are made of string cheese.

  3. You can buy an a520 and a 5600 can be bought for around 150 dollars if you search about which would absolutely destroy this upgrade. Just have to source some old ddr4.
Even then a used zen 2 would be multiple times faster also

  4. Thing is, if you went with intel for the same budget in 2012, you'd have ended up with a 2500k which would also desperately need an upgrade today. They aged about the same, with some games actually favoring the 8 threads on the FX.
THt said, X79 looks like a decent budget option to re-use that DDR3 memory. Especially if you can get a quad-channel board.

  5. It's funny that that Xeon is the chip in the 2013 Mac Pro dustbin that still sells for about $1000 second hand… but for only about half that with a quad core CPU.

  6. I’m currently running my home multi-VM proxmox server on a FX9590 kept alive from my old gaming setup. No good for gaming anymore, but runs my nas/plex/game host and a win10 vm just fine
