Text from the Gospel & Homily ~ February 25, 2024

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.

A reading from the holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, o Lord.

Jesus took Peter, James and John and led them up a high mountain apart from themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said, to Jesus in reply, โ€œRabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah!โ€ He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, โ€œThis is my beloved son. Listen to him.โ€ Suddenly looking around they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them. As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone except when the son of man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.

The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Iโ€™ve got a very straight forward message for you today. We heard the transfiguration in the gospel, this is my beloved son. Listen to him. That should sound familiar because if you keep up on daily Mass readings or if you read the bible on your own, this should call to mind the baptism of Jesus. We heard that early January this year. And every year. In the gospel of Mark as well, for that reading, a voice came from the heavens and said, โ€œYou are my beloved son. With you I am well pleased.โ€ So we have that same phrase in both the baptism of Jesus and the transfiguration according to Mark. And the takeaway here is that our faith is always an interconnected whole; the birth of the birth of Jesus is never separate from his death on the cross which we never mourn without also having the resurrection in mind. The transfiguration is linked to Jesusโ€™ baptism because the gospel is not a random mish mash of random stories and spiritual advice. The gospel is a testament, a testimony of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. If you want to understand Jesus Christ, you owe it to yourself sooner or later to know the whole story and how it all fits together. Jesus was pleasing to his heavenly father at his baptism and his transfiguration. Remember that today and for the rest of Lent, remember this especially if you please. Remember this on Good Friday. When Jesus says, โ€œMy god, my god, why have you forsaken me?โ€ do not listen to these lines as if they exist in a vacuum. They are all part of a greater whole. And beyond Good Friday when we celebrate that great day which is Easter Sunday remember everything that Jesus did endured and experienced while along the way. It all leads to the resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday.

  2. "Teach me, O greatest of all Teachers, to eat each morsel of Thy bread (body) with reverence, to drink each chalice cup of Thy wine (blood) with a consecrated heart & an obedient will. I offer up my emptiness to Thee. Without Thee I am lost to Thy kingdom where Thou dost reign. When my thoughts are absent from Thy instruction, I am a pitiful mirror broken into fragments or portions of Thy light. make me whole in mind, for I would be made whole in soul, body, & spirit." —-ARC
