  1. SMT – Doesn't the plastic brush plate have a brass bearing for the armature shaft? If so, that bearing should get a drop of oil. I recall seeing a track cleaning pad on a stick for cleaning track inside a tunnel.

  2. Live in TIMBUK TU Idaho and there are zero real hobby stores closer than 3 hours at 80mph. Need to use eBay but have pretty hard limit on not spending much more than $30 with shipping for locos. Have got some good deals but need to be vigilant! Take care!

  3. If you are having to eyeball two screws to see if they are the same size, line them up facing opposite ways and see if the threads mesh. If they fit in right snug then they are the same thread count, and it becomes easier to feel if the diameter is the same.

  4. Hey SMT – I have a suggestion for your PowerTorque brush / spring reassembly challenge. I took an old credit card and cut a one inch narrow slit in it. The slit should be just wide enough to pass the motor shaft through it. After you balance the springs and brushes in the retaining holes, place the credit card over the brushes with the slit in the middle of the assembly. Squeeze the card down to compress the springs and place the brush assembly down on the commutator side. Line up the motor shaft with the bearing and gently pull out the credit card and screw it back together – assuming you haven't misplaced the screws lol.

  5. When I was 6, this engine pulled a museum of railroad cars across the U.S. to celebrate the U.S. Bicentennial. I feel lucky to have seen the real thing. I remember it was a beautiful day with my grandparents.

  6. Glad to see you’ve redone your workbench. Was going to say something about old work surface but I don’t interfere with other peoples workspaces. Great video as usual.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

  7. Would like to say I appreciate these videos, my kid is very much into trains and this has helped immensely in understanding the basics of restoration and repair. Now if it wasn't for the fact everything looks so much smaller than in the videos it would be absolutely perfect 🤣🤣

  8. Have you ever had those days when running trains turns into nothing but misery well today was one of them if these things didn't cost so much I am sure they would have been bounced off the cement wall in the basement it was that bad I would fix one problem only to have two more and this went on for over an hour and I can't just leave it and fix it later I need to fix any problems now so when I go to use them again everything is ready to go but today was one of the worst days it seemed what could go wrong did and 10 fold but hopefully I have things running smoothly I tried running them after this last fix and all worked fine but I stopped and just got away from the layout alltogether because if I ran them and everything worked great for a little while and then some other problem happened I probably would have did something I know I would regret it was unreal the things that were happening one after the other, no track power ,then one train wouldn't move then track power again then steady derailing when I took the track section out n replaced it the rails didn't like up didn't connect it right so one rail was higher causing the cars to derail then track power I must have pulled the wire out of the connection when fixing another section it was one after another but it's sitting there I am gonna give it a try if they stop running again I'm getting a new hobby haha!!!

  9. I have a scrapbook and in it there are ads for train sets Before Christmas. If I remember right to the bicentennial set was $20. Right now the same song from the commercial is running through my head.

  10. I have a similar Tyco loco.
It is the Silver Steak model.
The electric motor and the bottom of the running gear is the exact same type as yours.
Although is has a busted coupler all the way to the trucks, and the truck skirts are somewhat good/bad condition
I have two of them .
One runs good and the other needs some work
One patina'd pretty bad and the other one looks new plus one Silver Streak caboose.
I did notice when you were going through your shelf you have the caboose at 1:04 mark
And it looks like at the 1:05 mark you have the loco too on the shelf where you found the Spirit of '76 caboose.
Now that I see the inner workings of this motor and the same as mine I may be able to tackle it and get the good one running better.
Plus I have had some luck finding other loco's for a minimum of $5 and got them running again (just needed lubrication)

  11. I personally use Marvel air tool oil. Costs less than $5 for a decent bottle. My experience says due to the heat and pressure you just need a decent oil and not a premium – the same way there is no real difference between a $10 HMDI cable and a $80 one.
