Can I fix my Freelander gearbox? Jatco 2-4 Duty Solenoid swap

After just one trip in our Freelander overlanding rig, Hippo’s gearbox broke – and the code says its the 2-4 Duty solenoid. Can I replace it or will I make it worse?

  1. Absolutely brilliant Matt. It just proves that we should never be afraid to take on these so called "difficult jobs" ourselves. I once had my Bongo fail MOT on a brake imbalance across the back axle due to an oil leak from the driveshaft outer seal. The garage wouldn't do it for me referring me to a commercial repairer, I ordered the new seals and did it in a couple of hours on my drive. Garage guy was a bit quiet when I took it for the retest telling him I'd done it myself.

  2. Well done Matt, great video and what a job to take on! It never ceases to amaze me how you never swear in a video. I do most of my swearing and cursing in the garage!
Hopefully you can now enjoy Hippo some more.

  3. I was wondering if you could help me with my Alfa Romeo 146. The hood needs to be open by 2 people one to hold the hood lever and one to go outside and push down on the hood a bit. i dont know what could be the problem so i hope you can help me with that.

  4. Did you check the fluid level? Needs to be 35-45 degrees C so obviously close to 40 is ideal, they are usually over full tbh! Don't undo the reverse band by mistake if you check it haha

  5. Every time I see you tackle one of these jobs and battle for hours to get it done it brings me one step closer to getting rid of my 'ICE' vehicles and buying an electric vehicle with their 12 moving parts! lol At least you can go camping again now! Just remember to bring the propane fuel! 😄

  6. Fantastic video! I think his proves fixing an Auto isn't such a big scary mystery box that we all think it is! This has given me the confidence to give my Volvo's autobox a go when it goes wrong (which it will) 😂
