Broken iPhones and Meta Quest 3

This week was a long one! Not only did Marques, Andrew, and David discuss the killing of Google Podcasts (shocker), Spotify using AI to translate podcasts, and iPhone 15 overheating issues, but they also go over everything from last weeks Microsoft event and the Meta event. Techtember is ending with a bang and the busy season rolls right through into Techtober with no break! The gadgets just keeping coming. Hope you enjoy!

Editor’s Note: I messed up Andrew’s score in the video graphic. He actually has 5!

  1. Imagine your car breaks down and you ask your google glass how to fix it. It gives you the probable cost and, since it would be linked to your bank account, recommends you to buy a bus card instead since it knows you can't afford it.

  2. on the heat issues and battery consumption, I find Instagram makes my 13 pro max hot and burn through more battery. I'm guessing the heat issues are a software thing as you guys suggested that is for whatever reason causing the cpu to spin up to 100% utilisation for no reason

  3. The pixel fold sort of had something like the iPhone 15 overheating thing for a little while.
I'm not sure which update fixed it but I haven't had that issue with my fold for a while.
Assuming the iPhone 15 issue will be fixed with some sort of update?

  4. All photos are lies. It is impossible to capture human perception of a moment. You're always framing things out. The colors always look different. All photos are art. The camera is just the tool.

  5. Face swap is highlighting the point that photos are really art as much as moments. The only person who will know the face swap will be the photo editor. Therefore, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

  6. The paper clip and floppy disk thing about how kids these days don't know what they are reminded me of this article I published in my Ph.D. where we interviewed college students and ask them to identify the objects in computer icons. One of the kids "identified" the floppy disk as a fridge! When we asked him why he thinks it's a fridge, he said "well, that's where you save things!" lol

  7. The putting smiles on people's faces seems very Black Mirror-like to me.

I think there is a use-case for creative tools like photoshop, but also an argument that 'what people want' can sometimes be contradict other 'wants'. E.g. Ask them "When you take photos of your family, would you like to document the activity 'as it was' or some imagined version? I think that they would say "as it was". Yet, if you give them a tool like this I think they would be compelled to put a smile on a friend/child's face even if the friend/child was unhappy in actuality. I feel like looking back it would then give a false depiction of what actually occurred and be pretty sad to have lost those 'demon face' moments.

I have family members that regularly have straight faces during photos. I don't imagine they would be very stoked to see relatives plopping giant smiles on their face haha.

  8. I think that glass on the back of the pro max broke bc the frame is more rigid and that more of the force is going to the glass than previous phones bc the titanium is a more rigid or the frame is just stronger if you watch that video close the chassis doesn’t actually bend the glass just shattered from stress

  9. I think the overheating has to do with iOS. Since I got iOS17 my iPhone is getting really warm, when it charges over MagSafe. It also can be overheating because I'm setting up this new voice thing at the same time. But if the iPhone is too warm you can recieve a message like "Your iPhone is getting really warm. The charging will continue if the temperature falls down to a normal level." or something like that. I'm using the iPhone 13 pro max. Never had this issue before.

  10. That Neuralink joke was in poor taste imo, as the primary application for neuralink are mental disability treatments. You shouldn't blame sick people for Elon having no morals. If you offer a medical treatment, you are the one who has to take responsibility, not the other way around. I honestly thought Marques would be better than going for low-blows against disabled people.

  11. Face swaping is a great feature.
The best feature of apple camera is its "vivid filter" without it no one can tell that the photo is taken from an iPhone or any other average camera phone.
