Brits Make Ohio Polish Boys for the First Time, Using Mr. H’s Smoked Sausages!”
Get ready to experience a uniquely American culinary classic like never before! In this exciting episode of Mr. H and Friends, we—a British family passionate about exploring and recreating American food—dive headfirst into making the legendary Ohio Polish Boy sandwich for the very first time. But there’s a twist: these aren’t just any sausages. They’re Mrs. H’s homemade kielbasa, slow-smoked to perfection on Mr. H’s Franklin Backyard Pit smoker.
If you’re craving bold flavors and an incredible food journey, this is the video you don’t want to miss!
What is an Ohio Polish Boy?
The Polish Boy is more than just a sandwich; it’s a hearty Cleveland icon loved for its combination of smoky, spicy, sweet, and tangy flavors. Traditionally, it features:
Grilled or smoked kielbasa served on a bun.
A generous helping of crispy French fries.
Creamy coleslaw that perfectly balances the richness of the meat.
Topped with sweet and spicy BBQ sauce or hot sauce to add a flavorful kick.
The result? A satisfying, messy, and undeniably delicious bite of Midwest comfort food.
How Did We Make It British?
To put a unique spin on this iconic dish, Mr. H started by preparing an authentic batch of kielbasa. From grinding the meat to mixing in traditional Polish spices and herbs, every step was done by hand, and the sausages were smoked low and slow for hours on Mr. H’s Franklin Backyard Pit smoker. The result? Juicy, flavorful kielbasa bursting with smoky goodness.
We kept it true to Ohio tradition by:
Crisping up golden homemade fries to layer on top.
Making creamy, tangy coleslaw from scratch.
Drizzling over a homemade BBQ sauce for the final touch.

I love your enthusiasm, you make me want to make that sausage at home.😄
Miracle Whip all day long!
My favorite mayo right now is “Mike’s”. It’s relatively new in my supermarket in the last year. Your difficulty in eating the sandwich reminds me when I was a kid trying to eat an Italian sausage and pepper sandwich. The trick May be to slice the sausage and mix with the other ingredients and then put it in the roll. That’s what my grandma’s did for us kids!
Sausage bbq sauce less slaw. Plus most of us here use a spicier sauce
Duke's …. I'm 74 and I only recall buying another brand once in my life. Hellmans, and only because a recipe specifically called for it. Not bashing other brands or their fans but I'm a Duke's guy.
Cleveland ohio here born and raised. A polish boy and girl are a stapel at local bbq joints in the city of Cleveland. A polish girl has pulled pork added on top of regular polish boy.
Messy eating is required 😂,sausage fries bbq sauce top of with cole slaw
Dukes for us ❤
Loved the video. I would let the slaw sit in the fridge overnight before using. It makes a big difference. Also, consider making your own mayo. I use avocado oil to make mine with some garlic.
I had these when i went to school cleveland cook sold out kitchen of house he deep fried kieabasa put in bun topped with green coleslaw krinkle cut fries and sprayed hot sauceon them and used french fries scoop up coleslaw
I almost always go with "toasting" bread ❤! It just bumps up the flavor
I’m an American and I’ve never heard of these. At least not by name. By the way, all smoked sausage isn’t kolbasa.
My favorite mayo is Bama. Second favorite is Dukes.
Toasting the buns for any hotdog or burger is purely personal preference. I like mine steamed instead.
Hellmann's is theeeeee best. Hands down. Best flavor as a spread. Duke's is good for mixing in recipes because it holds the texture. Stays creamier.
😂
Ohio! Sweet Baby Ray's in my fridge right now. Also, try a pulled pork or smoked brisket sandwich with slaw, fries ( optional) and plenty of BBQ sauce on buttered and toasted sliced bread (outer side only). Let the meat warm up in the sauce. As a kid, we just had on untoasted regular bread. Saucy, soggy deliciousness…eat at home with towels! 😂
Yal forgot the mustard.
I like Kraft's salad dressing……not as bland as mayo……I find Hellmen too salty!!!!
Sweet Baby Rays is a must in ever kitchen
This is only a northern Ohio/Cleveland thing.
I'm from Cleveland. A Polish Boy is your entire meal. I use a knife and fork. But I do know folk who push as much down in the bun and get a bite. But eat it anyway you want.
It’s always Dukes.
Never tried one before but it looks yummy. 😋
Never heard of this sandwich. Very interesting.
I think maybe you should have just kept the fries as a side instead of putting them on top.
I don't like mayo I like miracle whip.
👍👍
Great job
I have lived in Cleveland my whole life (I am no kid). Never had a Polish boi. I cannot tell you if you are right, or wrong on how you made it, but, I can tell you, as we used to say "that's close enough for government work!"(There is really no right or wrong way to make this stuff, it's all learn as you go)
PS- It's not Kiel- basa- most of the folks I know say "Kiel bah-see". O!!!! H!!!!!!!…….
If you want to explore one of the strangest regional cuisines found in Ohio and perhaps most of the USA check out Cincinnati style chili. I grew up eating this as a kid. We never lived in Ohio but it was my mom’s food culture.
They are better with hot sauce instead of bbq sauce. Can’t go wrong either way though
For the city rivalry you should do a "primantis sandwich" from Pittsburgh
