Blown Engine–Broken Rod ! Autopsy 3.6 Pentastar Ram Jeep Chrysler

Not long ago we looked at this engine to diagnose a misfire on cold start. Low compression was found on cylinder 3 and it had a light misfire. The van returned with broken connecting rod, holes in the engine block.as well as evidence that all four valves made contact with the piston which also broke in half in the cylinder. The head has to be removed to find out more!

  1. Hey ray loved the video man good tear down I hate these pentastars and the timing chains? Gross.. I did want to offer up another potential cause for the explosion, I haven't seen it often but once or twice I've seen a fuel injector get stuck open and hydro locked the engine. And if your head gaskets look fine and there's no cracks in the head I'd be blaming the injector. Just my two cents of someone who's been watching your videos solely to help myself diagnose things and the banter is amazing. Keep up the good work!

  2. Although I've replaced many of these engines either from tensioner failures causing total devastation or thrown rod or no compression I've never gotten to tear one down great video

  3. It's curious the piston oil squirter is not aligned on cylinder 3. Could have been bent in the destruction, or could have been damaged previously causing poor lubrication on that cylinder.

  4. I think FCA, Stellantis or whatever they call themselves now, they are FIAT, in my eyes, they had leftover sand from casting, which was a big problem with some of the early 2012-2014 3.6 Pentastar motors, which clogged up radiators and heating cores, and caused overheating issues. In addition, the oil filter housing assembly fails in just about everyone of them, due to being a piece of crap plastic unit that gets brittle or breaks from tightening the oil filter cap a bit too much. They say an improved “A” unit is available, which was put in mine, a 2016 Wrangler, had a rear main seal and oil filter housing fail at 40k miles when we had a cold blast here in Dec 2022, so much for a “capable” vehicle. I have not heard of the JLs, with 3.6 motors having the same issue, although I see many of the JLs equipped with the 2.0 Turbo 4 cylinder, which I would never opt for. My 2010 Rubicon with the 3.8 is a much better motor, although a bit underpowered, but it’s a JK, not a JKU, so the lower weight is fine with the 3.8. it’s not made of plastic like the 3.6. They should have kept that workhorse 4.0 inline 6, which was the best motor ever. Dorman and Mishimoto make aluminum oil filter housings, which I will opt for if it fails again. I also had a ‘91 Wrangler with the 4.0, and although not rated as high as the 3.6 for HP and Torque, it felt much more “torky”, especially at low rpms.

A big problem is people gotta change that oil, no more, than every 5000 miles, 3-4K miles if mostly short trips, and use a good synthetic. Don’t believe this “good for 1 year” or “Every 15k miles”, which is simply another lie for “Planned Obsolescence”, where you will have catastrophic failure, like here, when you are no longer warrantied.

If I could find a low mileage 2006 Wrangler Rubicon with a manual transmission that is not “rusted out”, that would be my dream, but I opted for a low mileage 2010 Rubicon, 58k miles, in pristine condition, the 3.8, but gotta make some compromises.

  5. By the look of that steam cleaned looking piston I would put my money on headgasket failure and coolant leaking into the cylinder thus hydrolocking #3 and bend/breaking the rod. It would also explain a misfire on #3 that probably got worse then killed the engine.
