Blackburn Buccaneer S.Mk 2B Strike Aircraft, RAF No.208 Sqn, XV352, Nellis AFB, Red Flag 1977 OP

Blackburn Buccaneer S.Mk 2B
Designed as a specialized strike aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons, the Blackburn Buccaneer was first flown on April 30, 1958. This mid-wing, twin-engine monoplane had a number of advanced features, including an area-ruled fuselage and a variable incidence tailplane. The Buccaneer served with the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force between 1962 and 1994, seeing action in the first Gulf War when 12 Buccaneers flew 218 missions to drop bombs and to provide a laser designation capability for other British aircraft. Buccaneers also served with the Fleet Air Arm between 1962 and 1978, where some were modified to carry anti-ship missiles.
Red Flag is an annual large scale training exercise using ranges near Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. In August 1977, the RAF deployed 10 Buccaneer S.2B’s there from 208 Sqn, who totally astounded the Americans with their low flying agility. On succeeding exercises the Buccaneers flew at 50-100 feet. The Americans could see them, only when the dust was blown up from the desert floor by the jet efflux! An all-over camouflage scheme was needed for serious low level work, so the Buccaneers were painted in an overall two-tone desert camouflage, leaving the rear fuselage in the original grey/green paint around the jet exhaust.
Seen here is the aircraft in diecast metal made by Corgi in 1:72nd scale. It’s an extremely well-made diecast model with great detail.
