Big News – The Unrest in Katla Volcano / 500 Earthquakes Near Reykjavik

500 earthquakes have been detected near Reykjavík during the past 24 hrs and Katla volcano keeps on with her old tricks, keeping many of us awake although things look a bit better now. It would be a separate disaster on top of a natural disaster to experience a summer eruption in Katla so it’s best to be aware of how huge this system really is.

If and when Katla erupts, it will be very hard to acquire footage from there unless I have a super zoom camera so thats the next investment for my channel. Feel free to help out, but bear in mind that your subscription alone is helpful and highly appreciated.

  1. Was in Vik last September touring southwest Iceland. All I can say is that the scale of the Katla volcanic system is massive because it took us probably 3 hours of highway driving to pass it by on the Ring Road.

  2. Thank you for the great content and updates! I’m planning to come at the end of August. I hope that everything will be fine and that everyone will be safe.

  3. Takk fyrir keeping us up-to-date. I too am baffled by the lack of any articles about it in English. The Monitor is a couple months behind: https://icelandmonitor.mbl.is/news/news/2023/05/04/stronger_quakes_in_myrdalsjokull_than_thought_from_/ 🙁 Good to follow this as well: https://www.facebook.com/Vedurstofan (though they are a couple days behind) The most up-to-date is of course: https://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earthquakes/myrdalsjokull/ and this is a couple of months behind: https://volcano.si.edu/volcano.cfm?vn=372030

  4. If Katla decides to rise from her slumber, we're all going to suffer from it. Europe is far more populated than when it last blew big and will be far more sensitive to the effects. Volcanoes that big have a habit of pushing their eruption plumes above and way upwind of prevailing weather systems, so that when the ash starts falling, it looks like it's coming from the opposite direction. I'm not even going to imagine the size of the lahaars. Makes my spine shiver.

  5. I have a question. Coming to Iceland this August, we have booked a camper van and want to cross the highlands through to the north. if something happens with Katla or any other general warnings, will there be alerts on the phone for example? or is there a site we can look for information? thanks Gylfi 🙂

  6. Thanks for the good advice for tourists who wanna survive their adventure visits. I have had some interesting experiences hiking in "safe" areas near volcanoes that resulted in my feet getting burned or getting exposed to volcanic gasses. I'd definitely be the first to evacuate even if the government said it was safe, thanks for the good advice, again.

  7. Just read, Waking the Giant: How a Changing Climate Triggers Earthquakes, Tsunamis, and Volcanoes. The factors are many and very complicated concerning eruptions. They are pushing Yellowstone caldera in the U.S. Stay safe.

  8. Oh to be a geologist in Iceland right now! Whatever happens, I hope everyone will remain safe. Thanks for your work in letting those of us who can't be there watch your amazing country.

  9. Thank you for your frequent updates! I have just been visiting your beautiful country (again) and watching your videos was the best preparation for the trip. I am particularly fond of your coverage of what the local geologists and other experts are telling the Icelandic people about the various earthquake swarms happening, since that information is not otherwise available to non-Icelandic speakers.
As a side note, on July 1, I hiked up Útigönguhöfdi from Básar and then did the loop along Fimmvörduháls, passing by relatively closely to Myrdalsjökull. Several times, I could hear some low frequency rumbling in the distance.
