Big hacker is watching you: Who’s after your data, how they gain access, and why it matters

Guest speaker presentation by Professor Benjamin Fung
October 19, 2022 (Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2022)

Do you care if cybercriminals, hackers, and other unauthorized individuals get hold of your accounts and data? How do they gain access – and how do they profit from it?

What are the impacts of dis- and misinformation, and what’s the difference between the two? Is storing data in the cloud more or less secure than other methods? How can you stay prepared when new cybersecurity threats are discovered every day?

During Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2022, McGill IT Services was pleased to welcome Dr Benjamin Fung, the Canada Research Chair in Data Mining for Cybersecurity, as he untangled the implications of cybersecurity threats to you, the McGill community, and Canada. Graduate Program Director and Professor in McGill’s School of Information Studies, Dr. Fung has published over 130 research articles in refereed journals that span multiple areas of research, including data mining, machine learning, privacy protection, cybersecurity, services computing, and building engineering. His data mining work in crime investigation and authorship analysis has also received global media coverage.
