Kings and Generals’ historical animated documentary series covering the Pacific War week by week continues with another video. Last week, the invasion of the Solomons was up to a good start. Yet despite its tremendous losses at Midway, the IJN was still standing and it still had sufficient strength to contest control of the south seas from the US, so Admiral Mikawa now prepared for a bold naval ambush that would prove to be one of the worst defeats in the history of the US Navy. Join us as we cover the Battle of Savo Island, and as we also take a look at some new developments on the Kokoda Track.

  2. For christ's sake, please get your pronunciations correct as not only does it sound wrong but it is offensive to Australians. Kokoda is spelt with an "o", not an "a", so it is pronounced Ko-Ko-da, not Kokada.

  3. The more I watch these series, the more I understand that they only reason Japan lost the war was the industrial capacity limitations compared to US behemoth. US could replace any loss way faster than Japan, simple. In any major battle or engagement between two fleets and armies, Japanese admirals, generals, sailors, pilots and soldiers outclassed their American counterparts in combat skill. Many times the US escaped fatal engagements because they were lucky or the ability of Americans to crack Japanese communications and became aware of their plans in advance.

  4. The Americans has a habit of misidentifying the Takao class cruisers as a battleship.

First, Maya misidentified as the battlecruiser Haruna during the invasion of the Philippines, then Chokai as a battleship and it will continue upto the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

  5. FYI, the proper pronunciation of USS Vincennes is:
    Vin-Senz.

It is an Americanized bastardization of the French…this is rather common across the US Midwest, as English settlers changed the French place names into anglicized versions.

  6. They were spotted and reported. That’s a myth Kings n Generals
They were reported travelling ESE , then headed to Rabaul.
Excerpt from US Army war college Lt Col Quantock..
    5) An Australian Hudson aircraft identified the Japanese fleet mid-morning on 8 August and broke radio silence at 1040. This report was received in the early afternoon or early evening on 8 August and given to Admiral Turner. HMAS Australia, Crutchley's flagship, received this report via "Bells", the regular Australian broadcast, at 1818. USS McCawley, Turner's flagship, received it at 1842 over "FOX", the scheduled U.S. Navy broadcast from Pearl Harbor. The report gave Admiral Turner seven hours to prepare for an incoming attack. Unfortunately, the message misidentified the ships as three cruisers, three destroyers, and two seaplane tenders or gunboats. Admiral Turner focused on the two seaplane tenders and assumed that the ships were headed for Rekata Bay, only 155 miles from Savo Island, to conduct follow-on air attacks the next day

  7. Kokoda track is pronounced Koh-koh-da! Sorry had to say that but glad you said track not trail. I had several uncles who fortunately all came home thanks to the "Fuzzy Wuzzy Angles" who thoroughly deserve their own special.

  8. The American fast freighters were almost as rare and precious an asset as the aircraft carriers and would not be unduly risked either. The best break for the Marines was their capture intact of large Japanese ration storage facilities around the airstrip. They found the beer and canned seafood "made the place worth fighting for", the rice, not so much.

  9. Great video, as always. Couldn’t help but crack a smile at the pronunciation of Vincennes (the “probably” correct French “vahn-sen”), as compared to the Americanized “vin-sanes” (the ship, named after a battle, named after a town in Indiana that is definitely pronounced that way 😊).
