Barry Sanders First Game for the Lions…The Build Up, First Carries…and Touchdown

Sept 10th, 1989 saw the beginning of the Barry Sanders highlight reel and legacy and football life with the Lions. The build up to his first carries was as dramatic as one of his runs and when the time came to shine; he took the ball and ran with it; the Cardinals were Barry’s first victims. His best runs from the game as well.

*I know…now…that Pontiac is a city and not just a car brand. That was my bad. I also had a sweet uncut version of this footage that didn’t include my commentary. However, Youtube will not allow the posting of this video unless I modify it in some way. The footage is too good not to post and even my rambling cannot ruin Barry’s first game…I hope you enjoy.

Check out the Barry Playlist, his first big game with the Lions and last game with Oklahoma State:

  1. As a lifelong Bears fan, I loved how humble Barry was. He was exciting to watch even if it was sometimes at my team's expense. He could have easily beaten the all-time rushing record held at that time by Walter Payton. I said at the time he deserved to. But he retired instead.

  2. First thing I noticed about Barry was the fact that he would score and hand the ball to the ref & run off. Didn’t need to showboat because he was a highlight reel just by playing his heart out. Remembering being told “act like you’ve done it before”

  3. On his first play, No 38 of the Cards tries to end Barry's career;.goes for the knees after Barry was stood up; what a filthy, disgusting act of cowardice, fueled by toxic jealousy of the fanfare and buzz surrounding the future superstar. That really was a sick act. One of the worst I've ever seen.

  4. Pretty much how he was treated in his career with the lions, such huge talent and the best at his position and disrespected in the fact they never built the team around him. Lions wasted him
