  3. If you're going all the way with this…be prepared to grow, laugh, learn and suffer with these characters. The first episode is in some ways my favorite, if only for the innocence and the fact that I know what lies ahead for these men. This was when their biggest threats were "Army noodles with ketchup." I love the power move Winters makes by literally grabbing the pen out of Sobel's hand while he was abusing his power…it's brilliant, and a true story. Hard to call this a TV show honestly, it's a 12 hour Saving Private Ryan in quality…CURRAHEE! ♠

  4. The performance of Easy Company was definitely down to Sobel and his training, not because of Winters. Sobel's harsh training forged them into such a fine unit. Sobel's problem was actually leading men in the field. So when Col. Sink transferred him to the parachute training school he was acomplishing two things. He was removing an unfit officer from Easy Company, while still recognising that he was excellent at training people. He essentially promoted him out of harms way

  5. Sobel is not a unique type of Soldier. I saw a few in my day. They appear hard, and definitely can be put in a role that fits. But when it comes to making quick decisions that have consequences for their ego, they fold.

I would love to give examples, but I’m too old to risk hurting someone who made it through the shit for a flaw they had no control over.

After all, I’m hardly perfect myself.

  6. What is with reactors now, that have the film audio so low, you can't even hear what they are reacting to? If I turn it up enough to hear it, when he speaks, it will be blowing out my speakers.

  7. So from the time i was 17 yrs old back in 1993 every Jan at the Battle of the Bulge Reenactment in Fort Indiantown GAP, PA with E/ 506th living history unit we had almost all the org. Troopers with us (along with Troopers from other Airborne units, and at other events during the year) in our Barrack's and at the public battle. it was this event were i grew up Drinking Prop Blast listing to stories , laughing and singing with these Troopers. God i miss them scalawags those late night drunk Grunt to Grunt talks sitting on bunks with canteen cups of Prop blast and it was this event were XXXX read the letter he got from Tom Hanks asking permission to do it. then he asked us what we thought and we shouted a big HELL YES!! lifting our drinks 100+ Drunken Troopers cheering, them were some epic hangovers

  8. Sobel gave the troops a spaghetti dinner, then ran them up and back down Currahee, to not only weed-out the weak ones, but to also stroke his sadistic ego. The upset look on his face was because, not only were the men not quitting, but they were additionally singing songs as they strong-willed themselves up the mountain. The troops were letting him know that he wasn't going to break them ….. A sort of musical middle-finger back at Sobel.

  9. Your initial assessment of Capt. Sobel was correct. As a "trainer" of men for combat, his methods were top-notch, spot-on, though he did let his sadism show through at times. However, as a "leader" of men in combat, he was way in over his head. Add to his misadventures in exercises (leading the men into an ambush), the non-commissioned officers getting together with a vote of "no confidence" to Col. Sink, and it was obvious he had to go. However, the Colonel was aware of his prowess as a trainer, so that's why he was reassigned to another training unit.

  10. Sobel was the sort of officer who was excellent at administrative work and was exceptionally hard on Easy Company because he thought making them the best would enhance his promotion potential – but he was also the sort who could not get it together in the field and was a detriment as a leader in the field. A fair number of E Co vets credited Sobel with making it so tough they survived while still not liking him as a officer/field leader.

  11. So you were wondering if Sobel was going to preset Winters with his Silver Bar thus making him a 1st Lieutenant, I don't believe Sobel had the authority or right to deny him a promotion seeing as it came from Col Sink. And if Col Sink saw Winters with out his promotion and questioned him it would lead right back to Sobel. My guess is he was withholding it until his little power play to further emphasize his position as CO(Commanding Officer) of Easy Company.

  12. About the guy that did not get ready to run up Curahee. That guy gave up. These men had already done basic training and now were in Airborne training. The dropout rate for the airborne was high, even when I served. They were showing that not all were cut out to be Airborne. He would be reassigned to a regular Army unit.
