Today’s video is all about one of the most important crops in the garden…potatoes! I wanted to share why I am no longer growing potatoes in raised beds as I move towards container growing and allowing more space for the crops I’m growing for my mission of flavour over productivity. I really hope you get a lot of useful tips on growing potatoes, and towards the end of the video, you will also learn how to plant maincrop potatoes in containers.

How many times did I say potato in this video?😂 By the way the container sizes in this video are 30litres 🙂
Nice vegetables garden
Thank you… I do not have a green thumb but your thorough explanations makes me think I just may be able to do it!!
Well done sir. You’ve earned a new subscriber with that. Many thanks, peace
How many litres are the containers you are using?
Good video. Yes, pots can go in all sorts of awkward spots, and make space for other things in your row beds. You also get a good depth of soil, so more spuds And, if disease does strike, you can isolate that pot of soil. And it is fun, tipping them out, and cuts out the digging and lifting. I have to do all my veggies in containers, as my shelterbelt trees have been creating havoc with their roots, following down the length of the beds, and taking all the water, and nutrients! After havinb wasted so much money on water, and so much time watering, for very little yield, l am now harvesting enough to eat, some to preserve, and some to share. I set it up gradually, using secondhand pots and my own compost. I bought some potting mix, and some new crates, when they came up on special at a cheap store. And l was able to take advantage of my govt covid grants at the time, and dedicated the money to making my veggie garden workable. This certainly sped up the process! I am glad l lived cheaply, and invested the money into becoming more self-sufficient. Black pots last for years…some of mine are 25 years old, and still going…and that includes surviving the hot Aussie sun, and frosts. When they split, they make good totes for mulch, or cut the base out, and they make good tree trunk guards, preventing your mulch from coming in contact with the bark, and so preventing collar rot. Some of my tree guards have done 15 years as a pot, and 15 years as a tree guard, and are still going! 😁 So, yeah… even if you have to save up your pennies to buy them new, they are good value. Thanks, Huw! 😊👍🦘🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴
Namaste 🙏🏼. Novice learner here. 3 queries. 1. Growing many vegetables in same space is it similar to food forest concept? 2. If plants are grown one after another, won't it ruin the top soil ? 3. If I grow veggies in plastic bins, won't micro plastic enter the veggies n then to human blood via food ? Eager to get your expertise on these.
I always found the problem with potatoes in buckets is the cost of soil and having to buy so much, which makes them not so cheap as chips. I am for the first time reverting back to raised beds and just adding dedicated potato fertilizer. One drawback as you mentioned, is not getting every little potato out and finding a new potato growing amongst next years crop. My plastic 7 liter pots turned to fabric 12 liter grow pots, and even here they were disappointing with a meagre 1-2 kg/pot. Every year I chitted my potatoes for anything up to six weeks, but this year (next week) I will plant each King Edward directly into one 3" pot and start off in my propagator set to 10C and plant out as a plant, 6 to 8 in five 1m X 0.6M X 0.6m raised beds 35 to 40 potatoes and see what happens. I feel that way I will save on soil and give the potatoes more room to spread their roots. Another thing I want to try, is watering with a high potash tomato feed after flowering to see if that boosts tuber growth.
Cardboard boxes, garden dirt mixed with compost and some manure, and a steady diet of fresh grass clippings to keep the potatoes covered as they develop….and the occasional splash of fertiliser, and Wa La….potatoes all summer and a good crop in the fall. Easy Peasy. No fuss, no muss. Potatoes aren’t fussy, they just need room to grow.
I am growing my potatoes! in the ruth stout method. I really like this method! I find it much betterto harvest! LOL
when they're in the container in "storage" mode, do you keep them in a weather protected place (greenhouse, garage, etc.) or do you plan to leave them outside?
nice video. But dont you fear that there might migrate some of the chemikals out of theplastic of the container into the potatoes?
I couldn't find a follow up video to this. How productive was this method? Anything you'd do differently?
Is the reason so many people used raised beds because they don't have the equipment to till the earth? Or the space?
question : what is the expected yield from each bucket every how long of time , estimate would be good to calculate the value per bucket in time
Is the nitrogen draw down of any concern with the decomposing grass?
Thanks a lot of potatoes never realized they could be planted so deeply..thought that was a gradual progression as the green growth grew…to add more soil around it…am planting four different varieties myself right now two varieties sweet potatoes that will go through the summer months…best wishes looking forward to the end results…👌
If you're looking for cheap containers… ALDI bag for life.
Everybody has 10s of them.
They'll only last 1 year as UV will destroy them but I've been growing potatoes, carrots and onions in them for years.
We use old vehicle tyres as potatoes and sweet potatoes grow you stack another tyres and fill up with soil or straw in SA
I noticed you didnt use any additional fertiliser, how did these turn out?
Good job mate!I have zero experience ,but a I'm curious…using those plastic baskets ,it's alright for quality of those potatoes?o hope I've made myself understood,I'm watching you from Romania.Cheers mate?
Since food costs has risen, a pound of organic potatoes is anywhere between $2.00-3.00++ per pound. Bunches of organic greens are $3.00-3.50, broccoli is $3.99 per pound, a cauliflower is $5.99+ each, and so on. Seems like groceries is getting more expensive daily! I’m a semi new gardener, and it’ll be my first season growing more than just herbs & peppers! Currently growing (8) 25 gallon grow bags of potatoes + 6 veggie beds, and several whiskey barrel of berries this!
I have a ton of left over containers from landscaping plants and my soil is soo rocky. Containers are they way to go
THANK YOU!!!! 😊
Great suggestions. Thanks. I'm particularly pleased because I don't have a garden, only a mini-terrace on the ground floor of an apartment building. I live in a big city. So far I've had potatoes in large bags with the earth in them.My big pots (50 cm) are for herbs and cucumbers, peas, garlic, ginger, turmeric. but this year I use flower boxes and other pots. Potatoes come in big pots. I have about 8 or 12 pots.a 50cm.yes it's minimal but consider: i'm old, paralyzed, in need of help, in the middle of the big city and just doing it for fun. I was never a garden owner.I have no idea and say: if something grows, it grows well and nothing grows ok, then it's also good. I don't use fertilizer. Only coffee grounds, egg shells, banana peels and the cigarette ash of my carers.even the simplest potting soil is ok because good soil can't make my small pension.your idea of storing potatoes is great.that didn't occur to me old lady.i hope googl translates well because i don't speak english.thank you for the subtitle language selection.all the best for you and best regards.
Use low seed hay does work as well , sugar cane mulch as well
The store-in-situ idea was brilliant.
Thanks
