Austrian Amibtion – Episode 25 – Spanish Legendary Campaign – Ultimate Admiral Dreadnoughts

Welcome back to Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts, where we’re about to witness a naval battle for the ages! In this episode, the Austrian navy has made a critical error in judgment, thinking that two battleships are enough to take on a single battlecruiser. Little do they know, we have a surprise in store for them, and they’re about to find out just how wrong they were. As we unleash our superior firepower and tactical brilliance, the Austrians are caught off guard and unable to mount a significant defense. Our single battlecruiser dominates the battlefield, taking out ship after ship and leaving the enemy reeling. It’s a stunning display of naval might and strategic acumen, and one that you won’t want to miss. So join me on this thrilling episode as we take on the Austrians and prove once again that it’s not just the number of ships you have, but how you use them that matters most.

  1. At 16:55 the order of declarations is backwards. The precipitating event is your rejecting Japan's demands, then the declarations you see show up in the wrong order, and end with Japan declaring war of Spain, which causes the cascade of events which you are seeing in reverse.

  2. Armed Merchant Ships in Austrian Service

Heraldo de Madrid: 22 October 1931

The Bandera lead a convoy raid into the Adriatic, following the success of the Rebeca. Escorted by the heavy cruisers Burlada and Tudela, both veteran ships, the Bandera found an Austrian and Ottoman squadron protecting ten armed transports of the Sava class carrying a mix of 4.2” and 3.5” guns. The escorting squadron was led by the Ernst class battleship Frederick with two Klosterneuburg armored cruisers, the Carinthia and Wels as well as the destroyer Wildfang D-14, which survived the July battle against the Rebeca. The Ottoman commitment were the cruiser Strashnyi and the Italian designed destroyer Nazario Sauro. The Ottoman Navy is an eclectic combination of ships.

It is difficult to determine the events of the battle as a number of ships were sunk before they were identified. We are sure the Ottoman ship Strashnyi was sunk first. The Austrian Navy has no light or protected cruisers and must borrow from their sometimes allies to cover this mission. The last two warships sunk were the Carinthia and Wels. It would seem the Wildfang D-14 was sunk second, the Nazario Sauro third, and the Frederick fourth. If so the Frederick was sunk by an ammunition detonation and the Nazario Sauro by uncontrolled fires.

Of the ten transports, the Karl, Seehund, Uzsok, Saida, and Fasana sunk from extensive flooding. The Sava, Turul, Sankt Johann, Lika, and Wiener Neustadt sank from structural collapse, that is, they broke apart. In total the transports lost an average of 90% of their 131 man complements and a total of 118 thousand tons of shipping capacity. The Austrian Navy lost a battleship, two armored cruisers, and a destroyer. The Ottomans lost one light cruiser and one destroyer. In total 3785 servicemen killed or lost. The Armada Real Española reports one man killed and fifteen treated for minor wounds, but with the ships running undermanned accurate numbers are hard to determine.

  3. Trouble in Sudan

Heraldo de Madrid: 13 October 1931

The Kingdom of Spain is continuing to lose transports operating in the Red Sea. The Squadron at Port Sudan is not strong enough to counter enemy activity. And the Regio Esercito is attacking from Eritrea to Sudan against the forces of the Ejército de Tierra stationed there.

  4. Our Rebeca

Heraldo de Madrid: 11 October 1931

One of the most successful ships of the war so far has been the Bandera class battlecruiser Rebeca. Operating deep in the Adriatic against the Austrian Navy with an escort of the Pamplona, Don Juan de Austria, and Tajo she intercepted a convoy of five ships, the Chameleon, Uskoke, Massagiere, Polyp, and Anaconda escorted by the Klosterneuburg class armored cruisers Zenta, Sankt Georg, Aurora, and Blitz. The Sankt Georg and Aurora were sunk so quickly that they were identified only by interviewing survivors picked up out of the water. The Zenta and Blitz were sunk almost as quickly. Of the five transports, the Chameleon, Uskoke, and Polyp sank from flooding. The Anaconda and Messagiere simply blew up.

A number of Armada Real Española ships have been operating at below full strength, which has been complicating reporting losses. However it appears that the Spanish lost seven men with thirty-five injured but returned to duty. Losses to the Austrian Navy appear to be 2385 officers and ratings lost, while the Austrian merchant marine appears to have lost 632 officers and merchant seamen as well as 43 thousand tons of shipping capacity.

  5. New Light Cruiser or Old Armored Cruiser, doesn’t Matter

Heraldo de Madrid: 15 August 1931

The Navarra class heavy cruiser Tudela is too experienced to be concerned with the likes of a Soviet Riga class armored cruiser like the Sviataya Troista or a more modern Mikhail Kutuzov class light cruiser like the Bekas. As long as the Tudela and her two escorts, the Zaragoza and Terror, control the range, everything will turn out fine. As soon as she had range the Tudela blown out the funnel of the Sviataya Troista, then turned her fire on the Bekas as she tried to close for a torpedo run. In ninety seconds the Tudela and the destroyers had blown up one of the Bekas’ dual torpedo launchers along with 35 of the launcher’s crew, battered the main tower, destroyed a main gun and barbette, set the Bekas on fire, saw her sinking by the stern, flooded the bow, and battered the hull before four massive 10” hits penetrated the aft and main armor belt. The Bekas sank from flooding. When fire shifted to the Sviataya Troista she lasted for literally seconds only before her forward main gun magazine exploded, sinking the ship from extensive fire.

All three Armada Real Española were operating undermanned. The Tudela was particularly running short. But only one man was lost in this engagement. The Soviet Navy lost 1357 officers and ratings killed or lost at sea, with 104 rescued from the ocean.

  6. Mopping Up Austria’s Big Ships

Heraldo de Madrid: 7 August 1931

The Bandera battlecruiser Rebeca, with a strong cruiser and destroyer escort and operating just south of the Aegean Sea, encountered two Ernst class Austrian battleships, the Siegreiche and Maximillan with three Klosterneuburg heavy cruisers as escort, the Szigetvár, Hallein, and Panther. The captain of the Rebeca, acting as the squadron commodore, decided at first to hold open the range and rely on superior Spanish weaponry to batter down the enemy, but when it was clear the Kapitans of the Siegreiche and Maximillan weren’t going to attempt to close to effective range of their older 12.4” guns, the commodore ordered all ships to steer closer to the enemy. With the focused fire of the Rebeca and the cruisers Pamplona, Burlada, Baranain, and Blanca pounding away at them the only answer the Austrians managed to give was on 12.4” hit on the light cruiser Blanca from the Maximillan. Both battleships were flooding, awash across the stern, and listing when the final hits blasted through their citadels and sank them. The Hallein and Szigetvár sank the same way while trying to fight. The Panther was burned down while trying to flee.

Armada Real Española losses were eighteen officers and ratings killed, 13 injured and returned to duty. The Austrian Navy lost 4605 officers and ratings killed, wounded, or lost at sea. 159 men were rescued from the water.
