  1. As an aussie who has been around a few decades, none of this will happen, the cost is half what it will be before anything hits the water. This deal is for union jobs in manufacturing thats it.

  2. So many pro-China commenters are so upset Australia dares to build up its defence force spending a modest 2% of GDP. Meanwhile China has no problem growing its military exponentially beyond a size needed for merely defensive purposes. It obviously wants to embark on a path of irredentist adventurism.

  3. I don't understand why Australians obey Americans so obediently? ? Australians will do whatever the Americans tell them to do.What is the conflict between Australia and China? ? territory? territorial sea? Historical hatred? Australia invaded China in the past, and it should also be the Chinese who are full of aggression against the Australians. The only explanation is that Australia has persecutory paranoia.

  4. From this I can predict that just over half these surface ships will ever be built at near twice the projected cost and years later than expected, with the ANZAC frigates certain to get a last minute major upgrade.
Not going to make any predictions about the subs though, that was only supposed to be a publicity stunt for Scomo and the latest move from the Nuclear Armed Australia lobby group and it looks like we are now stuck with it…. in some form…maybe.

  5. I have friend in the Australia Navy, problem isn’t the number of ship, it is where to find the crew to crew the already existing hull. They barely meet the recruitment last year and the projection is that the number will dropping this year as well. So the shipbuilding plan sound nice but unless they intend to scrap more ground unit and merge more division into 1 to allocate the manpower needed for the expansion plan, it only gonna sound good on paper.

  6. China has pulled the sleeping lion's tail. They've decided to massively enlarge their military but expected everyone else in the neighborhood to remain calm and not to invest in their own capabilities..

  7. Just my 2cents worth, manufacturing countries, as with all major wars have illustrated , are the power players.
Australia and certain other first world countries handed the gun to China regards firepower when we opened the free market.
China uses communist slavery to fulfil manufacturing goals and nobody else can compete.
    Hence we're all f**ked now.
Don't get me started on the woke crap also.

  8. Right off the bat, those don't seem like numbers for a serious military. Australia is an island nation, with a long coast to defend. They should have, at a minimum, over one hundred ships. Its obvious they are counting on the US navy to come to their rescue in a fight with China.
