Arcade Longplay [974] Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble II (US)

Played by: KAGE-008

Plot: ‘Following the events of Bubble Bobble, Bubby and Bobby set out to defeat the “Dark Shadow” and rescue the Rainbow Islands. The Dark Shadow is the entity responsible for the events in Bubble Bobble.’

This longplay aims for the best ending in the game. To get that, the 7 big diamonds and 3 mirrors must be collected. I also included a second playthrough at 1:01:58 where I show all the secret rooms, which requires all small diamonds to be collected in order.

  1. this game has gotten into legal trouble because of the unauthorized use of "somewhere over the rainbow" as the main theme
it was changed for nearly all future ports

  2. It can be very frustrating to get the Diamonds in the right order. They have to be collected from each part of the screen, from left to right, in the order of the rainbow: R (Red), O (Orange), Y (Yellow), G (Green), B (Blue), I (Indigo), and V (Violet). But this game is really fun. A great successor to "Bubble Bobble". I love all the shout-outs to other Taito games, too ("Arkanoid", "The FairyLand Story", "Darius", and "Bubble Bobble").

  3. Taito obviously looked at Capcom's "Street Fighter 1" when making this game, hence what the final boss says when you defeat him. Which boss theme was used for "Darius"? I don't recognize it. This version is overall the best one, but to the PC Engine CD version's credit, it has a really nice ending theme.

  4. most video game industries nowdays are trying mostly to impress us with their ultra realistic graphics and somewhere they lost it. they forgot what a true video game emotion is. To be clever and challenging, therefore adictive. It s not a coincidence that many indenpended companies today are immitating the graphics and the gameplay of these oldies goldies
