Animator Reacts To Grounded 2 Making The Last of Us Part 2

Join me as I take a look at the full documentary Grounded II Making The Last of Us Part II, which takes viewers through the development process of Naughty Dog’s acclaimed sequel, The Last of Us Part II. Learn from behind-the-scenes footage of what went into Part II’s development throughout the years, including its launch.

Certain sections have been edited out because of time constraints on my end and not wanting to discuss those sections in the video.

  1. I think that the next game from Naughty Dog will be a new IP, and then the project after that one will be TLoU3. As they work on this new IP, Druckmann (and probably Halley Gross) will cook the story for TLoU3 in the background

  2. There was a lot of videos and streamers hating on TLOU2, I remember that time perfectly. With the time it has gained a lot of respect between gamers, but still is a pretty divisive videogame

  3. On Abby's design. Your argument is that it doesn't make sense, because of lack of food resources. However, the game itself explains that the WLF isn't lacking resources. Especially for their soldiers. The game even shows a gym with soldiers working out right when we start playing as Abby again.

There's also other scenes showing Abby's gradual changes as she keeps bulking up.

Even at the end of the game during the final fight. Abby is not as bulky. She looks slimmer and sickly. Why? Because she's been deprived of the resources necessary to maintain her physique.

The game does a good job of explaining why Abby's body is the way it is and why it changes throughout the game. They put a lot of thought into it.

  4. I don't get why you are so dismissive about the co-author's reaction to this weird criticism on violence against women. You said they should have left it out. Why? Showing a key member of the crew being frustrated by feedback in the middle of production fits very well into a documentary like this, and since the theme of women and violence is a key part of the game, it's definitely not out of place. Based on your reaction I have the feeling that feminism as a subject is bothering you somehow? You seemed kinda triggered when she used the term.

  5. Seeing those comments really upset my stomach because I understand how hard you guys work despite me not actually working in that field. I grew up watching dev videos and diving into the making of several videos games. I can only imagine the stress.

  6. Naughty dog and rockstar are by far my favorite studios. So it’s really cool that you worked for rockstar and done work on a naughty dog game, which by the way the animation in both studios games are absolutely fantastic man great work!

  8. York, it's always great to see your takes and insight. Specifically on this documentary, it was refreshing to see you weren't blindly biased regarding TLOU2/ Naughty Dog, even though you have worked for them. This made for an even more engaging watch.

  9. the reason for making abby's appearance so different was not just to make it different from ellie, it was to resemble joel. and in a lot of ways in not just her appearance she does – just think about the scenes abby has in the later half of the game, you will find many similarities between her and joel

  10. 46:00 that's literally the only criticism I've heard of Abby's physique/appearance that's somewhat reasonable, but I think from what we see of the WLF they do seem to have a surplus of food as well as the gym facilities for it to be realistic

  11. I think you're dismissing the section of the bad faith articles on violence as merely an outside issue regarding the game, and not one that holds any merit to comment on. In which case, I think you are wrong about that. The context of the female narrative is a conversation the game explores so therefore it is an integral part of that game's development. When she says "if you want to have a serious debate about feminism.." , the response "no we don't though" is frankly irrelevant to her point. She's not responding to the community's needs, that is said to give bts on the storytelling angle, to what it is that story needs. She is giving her advice navigating that space, specifically her female perspective on that aspect, one which serves a great deal for that certain representation. The entire bts of any game involves its devs, so it makes sense it highlights their insight. Why not comment? Especially when artists get threats for their creativity. Of course outside opinions shouldn't go to affect development and the position likely requires some tough skin for combating that but does that mean they shouldn't defend their art? The purpose of the game is to start conversations. Admittingly no one did say the director Halley Gross is "less female" for said reason or the other, but when Polygon publishes the question "How many women were involved in the creation, editing and approval of this trailer? In an industry (and studio) that's predominantly run by men, did women feel comfortable offering a critique?", what does that imply about women and what their development experiences are expected to look like? The misconception here about women holds strong in this industry. Respectfully, this is just to bring awareness, but I'd ask you to reflect on how that particular section made you uncomfortable. Good day

  12. I watched this doc immediately and man… It made me feel fucking exhausted in the last 45 minutes just watching the talking head interviews being progressively more downtrodden because they all just want to go home lol incredible doc and great getting your perspective upon rewatch. Also it was funny to see your reaction to the co-writer's rant. So much of this doc feels like naughty dog devs getting mad about a comment on reddit and then spending months and months just to disprove it like the ultimate debate lord LMFAO

  13. I liked most of your reaction, I didn't appreciate the tired and old butthurt "arguments" of why Abby can't have the physique she has or why Joel didn't need to die like you know more in a 3 min realization than the decades of preparation and knowledge this people have of the characters they themselves created.

  14. I like the decision to make abby buff. It shows how obsessed and dedicated she was to getting Joel. Also, her living situation at the stadium was pretty nice. They did not look like they were starving or struggling.

  15. Dude, chill about the resources. Yes, a group in this world is gonna have somebody like this because they need that type of security and if you know the game, you know that Abby was a high-ranking Security type member in that group so it makes sense that she is that Muscular and able.
