America's Revenge Bomb Hit So Hard It Left a Giant Crater in the Ocean

(QUOTE) “My first instinct was to jump overboard.”

That was how Air Group 9 leader Lieutenant Commander Philip H. Torrey Junior described his reaction to hearing the loudspeaker on USS Essex announce the target of their upcoming strike: the notorious Japanese base of Truk Lagoon.

Known as “The Gibraltar of the Pacific,” bristling with anti-aircraft guns, shore batteries, airfields, and battleships, it was virtually impenetrable – a one-way ticket to the bottom of the ocean for any pilot or captain foolish enough to attempt an attack. The island fortress was so remote and protected that few Allied personnel had ever even seen it.

In February 1944, the American carrier fleet was about to do the unthinkable –the ultimate payback for Pearl Harbor– a daring assault on Truk and the many Japanese ships anchored there. If they could pull it off, this would be more than a hard rain – this was Operation Hailstone.

  1. Pearl Harbor Was Not a surprise attack, It was ALLOWED to happen so America could get in to the war, so that the War pigs could make money.
My Father was Stationed on the island of Tinian when the Enola Gay took off to bomb the Japs. GOD Bless every man and Women that fought and or died in that war to line the pockets of a few selfish men. Just like every war before and after its all about the Money.

  2. At 2.33 you say that two (Consolidated) PB4Y-2 (Privateer) took off but you show footage of two B-24 Liberators.

The Privateer was developed from the B-24 but was a totally different aircraft most notable in having a single fin tailplane instead of the double fins of the B-24.

  3. @Dark Seas So, where is the revenge bomb? Stop using clickbait you don’t need to use this stupid tactic, however since you’ve stooped low enough again, I’ll use this as my reason to hit “Do Not Recommend this channel” button. Too bad, but I won’t support clickbaiters.

  4. This is a great video, but comparing this to Pearl Harbor isn't really accurate. The United States and Japan were in a state of war. It was not a sneak attack the way Pearl Harbor was. The more of these videos I see, the more I am in awe of "the greatest generation."

  5. My Dad was a 3rd.Class Gunners Mate. On the Essex. He would talk about Heroic acts of, pilots and Sailors and Marines. He was the only survivor of his original gunnery crew. During this fray, a live shell ejected into their turret. My dad grabbed it ran out of turret, with the explosive timer running down and with seconds to spare threw it over board. Their turret was above the Captains bridge. He was put in for a medal by his Chief, but later CV9 was hit by kamakazi during another battle and he had, been sent below for water, and fowl weather gear. He woke to 2nd and 3rd, degree burns, on hands and faces, and dislocated knee and shoulder hanging partially on Deck below turret and and leg, and foot stuck, through access ladder. Torn metal, and huge hole where his turret, use to be. He was found, by damage control, and carried to sick bay…

  6. One of the most impressive things Joseph Stalin ever did was to get the US to badger Japan into attacking Pearl Harbor and kicking off war in the Pacific War. And, it is very unfortunate that his grandchildren in the US are still hard at work in Washington against their two worst enemies a.) The American Citizen and their Democratic ideals, and b.) Putin, that betrayer of Soviet ideals.

  7. Truk, while used as a forward naval base, never had the scale of defenses that the Allies believed it did. Great for parking ships, and maintaining them, but the defenses were nowhere near as formidable as, say, Iwo Jima, or Tarawa.

  8. The AI Voice employed to Narrate this VERY interesting WW2 Pacific naval battle, proves TOO Continuously overly-dramatic AND its Tempo is ponderous!!!!!!! A great example of counter-productive narration!!!
