  1. When I was little we went to the beach. There was an air display over the Solent. Dad said to Mum…. "It's alright Sally, they're ours"… a couple of minutes later a Lancaster bomber with a Hurricane and a Spitfire flew over.. Dad was born in 1932 and Mum in 1938… they knew and remembered those distinctive sounds…

  2. 2:41 Probably not really. The nazis seriously lacked in warships. Even if the sky is controlled it doesn't change the fact you need a large fleet to get troops across the channel. The allies took years gathering resources, training troops & gathering equipment to invade Normandy. The allies used specialised landing craft, mulberry docks, had naval & air superiority & a literal pipeline under the sea to funnel fuel for vehicles direct to Franceand even then it was a struggle. Churchill himself said he was more worried about the Battle of the Atlantic rather than the Battle of Britain.

  3. I know the Spitfire is Britains darling, but honestly the Hurricane deserves way more love and admiration. It actually was responsible for more enemy aircraft shot down than the Spitfire. But it didn't quite have the same iconic look or sound to it I guess. So it's been largely forgotten, which is a great shame. Absolutely amazing aircraft.

  4. It was only made possible by Dowding, who, with some opposition from establishment figures, set up an integrated control system to deal with such an eventuality. It ensured that 'planes were available and airborne ready to intercept the attackers.

  5. We appreciate your reaction to this and yes there are films about this, they just weren't made in Hollywood. You can probably appreciate now, after seeing this how annoying it is when Americans say, they won the war for us. Go give your son a cuddle. xx

It was about this time that the commandos were.coming i nto being only being moaned about and.hampered.by some of the established chain of command who insisted the established .way was the only way to wage war ,they were losing and .something had to be done Churchill heard about this and.arses were duly kicked for this.attitude.snd behaviours .when the success operations.did work.sometimes.with. casualties against over whelming odds .that on reflection got results much greater than the.old ways ,,argument won.sir.buffton tufftons silenced paras and commandos would become.part of the bigger picture

  7. They wouldve still had to have got past the home fleet. Also the luftwaffe only had the range to go as far as london so we still had RAF bases in the west and far north. Also if german troops had landed guaranteed the public wouldve started a resistance movement that would've put the french one to shame lol

  8. The movie, "The Battle of Britain" not only has been made, but is also one of the very best historical war movies ever made. It is so true to events it is practically a documentary

  9. I realise most Americans are taught you saved the world but at this point, we, the British stood alone & we knew our funny little island was the prize Hitler wanted.
With a supreme effort from all people & Prime Minister Churchill, we pulled together to make as many aircraft as we could. With squadrons made up of many nationalities Dowding's plan was put in into force & even so, we were outnumbered 2 to 1 .
We as a nation knew if the Battle of Britain was lost, we were lost.
May I suggest you watch these movies.
    The Battle of Britain
    First of the Few
    Reach for the Sky.

These will show a lot about the British mentality during this time .

  10. As a secondary thing, the whole focus here is on London but please don't think it was just there, Coventry did not exist following the Luftwaffe visited & Manchester, where I live that had Europe's largest industrial area Trafford Park was a main target.
Industrial England was a major target for Germany it had to be destroyed.

  11. Now you see why so many people hate the Germans, and why our comedians make so many jokes about the Germans. There's still people that remember these raids, it won't be until all the children of the time have passed on, until these events pass from the public consciousness that the animosity goes away.
We had around 700 serviceable fighters across the whole country at this point in time.the German's had some 2,500 serviceable aircraft.
It too 10 minutes to refuel and re-arm a Hurricane, and 25 to refuel and re-arm the Spitfire, some squadron's only had those few moments of respite.

  12. The NAZIs were ready to invade the shores of the UK from France, standing on the. Cliffs at Dover directly opposite where France was it’s closest at that time you could probably have seen the landing craft ready to load with troop and come steaming a cross the “English Chanel” as it’s called. The NAZIs had given the invasion the name of operation “Sea Lion” all they needed was the RAF to step aside and let them over.
At that time pilots from all over the world almost, were volunteering for the RAF because they knew if we, Britain, were defeated the NAZIs would have destroyed any other resistance relatively easily.

  13. One of the old Gents who were giving first hand WWII accounts, Jimmy Perry, after the war would go on to help bring a comedy to the BBC called Dads Army which was a bit of a parody of the Civil Home Guards which took the too old and too young to fight in the war itself to act as guards in the villages and streets when required, to be honest just as is happening in Ukraine today. Except it was a bit of a tongue in cheek show because what Churchill ordered was to organise anyone of fighting age men boys and woman who volunteered to train as behind the lines gorilla fighters for assassinations, blowing things up and spying with stashes of arms ammo and explosives to make the biggest problem for the enemy they could. It did mean that if you weren’t in the know then for fifty years know-one knew this was the real home guard.
Dads army is probably still available maybe on YouTube.
    Cheers Aah kid
