Honestly the F-4 being built without a gun and ill working missiles is partially the reason why later fighters like Air Force F-15 Eagle and Navy F-14 Tomcat were built with guns and better working missiles
Not to mention the two engagements of Navy A-1 Skyraider's shooting down Soviet Mig-17's with their 20mm cannons

So there was a group of pilots called “Wild weasels” in which their job was to go up and bait the missile sites to shoot at them. The idea being, the missile sites on the ground had to turn on their radar to target the US planes. When the enemy radar was on its like a flashlight that we could see and target. So we’d bait the radar sites to turn on and then launch a “anti radiation” missile ( a missile that homes in on a radar signal) and destroy the enemy radar site. On the wild weasel pilot patches there’s some letters that say “YGBSM” Which stands for “You gotta be shitting me?!” Because that was the pilots reaction when they were first told what their mission was about.

Certain defense contractors made shitloads of money during the Vietnam war, so yes, our Congress was trying to make it last longer. Look at our military compared to theirs. Our military could have ended that war in days. We could end the war in Ukraine now and take Putin right out of the Kremlin. It would scare some other countries that have nukes though, so they won't risk it. I'm waiting for somebody to take out Kim Jong Un. If China were smart, they'd do it first, IMO.
