Instead of this, he should have just broke a deal with Aemond, that he will make him his successor, then stage a suicide, or assassination and then do the ship escape after the fact. I think Aemond may have entertained it. But Aegon is clearly not the brightest bulb in the box.

This are the human details that is not in the books but it is implied. You see, the book is written as a history book not as a POV like Martin is used to writing. Meaning that most of what happened is told by people that sometimes were not even present at the events.
In the case of Aemond he is a maniac in the books, a war criminal but at the same time he doesn't take the throne for himself. His brother is vulnerable and easy to kill and yet Aemond the already one-eyed "Kinslayer" doesn't kill his brother and is actually named Regent.
There is some shenanigans going on with Alys Rivers too but i wonder if the show will bring her in because she certainly plays an important role for Daemon, Aegon and Cole.

I just realized that at 41, if I fall down stone stairs like Ser Criston, I am not getting up. Like that would have been it for me. I would have just laid there & taken a sword to the chest

The main casuality here was Aegon. He didn't have enmity towards Rhaenyra nor she wanted to harm her family ever. Rhaenyra would have been perfect heir. Hightower ruin the house targeriyans.
