  1. Ah yeah, this part is rough. To answer your question of why it hurts…I think part of it is the job system. Hear me out. In other games, if you wanted to be a Dark Knight, you'd have to make an alt. This tends to break up the experience. This character has the memories of killing X boss with them, but then you switched mains for the expansion so killing Y boss is a memory attached to another character. This character has the rep grind from expansion B, but you can't be arsed to do that again on another character and so on.

This means it's easy for FFXIV to get a deeper hold on you, because everything you do contributes to your connection to your Warrior of Light. The Dark Knight job quests can be about how your character responded to the MSQ, because it's not an alt. Characters in the story can react to you and remember earlier parts of the story because the content is not designed to be skippable. It's easier to get invested.

It only hurts because you care.

  2. Huh… It is kinda weird how the church has so many killer chess robots I never thought of it until now.

I'm not sure if you remember but there was a scene with lahabrea and the pope talking about how they're going to kill "the bringer of light". To me that was them planning this assassination attempt.

  3. Crucial to me change from earlier versions of the game at 36:12 – Originally, even when you're playing as a healer, no one even makes an attempt. Now Alphinaud (and you if you're also a healer) both actually try but can't save him. It was my second screenshot of my frustrated white mage sitting back and doing nothing while my allies needed healing, after Nanamo.

To quote my friend, "stupid trash weeb game making me cry"

  4. This is a tiny itty bitty spoiler, because it's part of the obvious direction of the story. But I'm also not going to spoil unduly. I'm also going to be vague intentionally.

When you get into combat with the guy who threw the spear, if you get hit by his spear, you get a nasty heal reduction debuff. Thing is basically coated in fantasy anticoagulant.

  5. What really got me wasn't when Haurchefant got it. That was sad but I was OK to keep moving. Then we got to Count Edmond and he gives that absolutely broken "My son…" and I absolutely lost it.

  6. I did this part relatively recently on an alt that I've been writing for, and she has a romance with Haurchefant. It hurt so much more that time than any other time I went through that cutscene….

  7. The situation in Ishgard is, like a lot of things in FF14, about colonialism and genocide. Basically, what the founders of Ishgard did was "genocide", an "act so bad it cannot be forgiven nor forgotten". And even if their descendants have forgotten about it, they still benefit from it. They aren't culprits of it, but they share responsability and should do their utmost to pay back and fix what they did.

  8. Something lost as the game has changed over the years – back in Heavensward, Paladins couldn’t block magic attacks. He was doomed the moment he stepped in to protect you.
