A Love Letter to Battlebots – Movies with Mikey

It’s robot fighting time!
We know this one is a little off topic, but we needed a palate cleanser after Space Jam 2. Battlebots is our favorite sport here at Filmjoy and we want to tell you about it so we can nerd out together next season!
If you’re craving some traditional MwM film content, why not check out Nebula? Our newest video is about why we think Prey is the best entry into the Predator franchise since the first film.

  1. Having grown up with the British version, the part that made it for me was that it was a purely amateur sport. The combination of engineering students, after school clubs, father/son bonding time and just a bunch of lads having a go made for very fun stories, some truly strange designs and themes, as well as a general spirit of fair play and camaraderie back stage.

  2. Mikey, this video rocks! We noticed you used some clips from Pit Pass in there. That's pretty cool to see. Thank you for sharing your passion for BattleBots with your community. The friends and family that surround BattleBots are some of the best parts.

  3. FUCK I'm excited to watch this. It's on pause as I'm having to configure lasers and 3d printers… when people ask how a Poli Sci Major like myself could have all the crazy tech and toys I do… Witch Doctor, Hypershock, and Tombstone are who raised me!

  4. I was fortunate enough to be in a Boston theatre watching this year's finale, with the huge crop of local bots competing. Incredible experience – you'd have thought you were at a Sox game, the way the crowd cheered and screamed and went berserk for every local bot winning. (And when what happened to Riptide happened, the entire theatre started screaming rapturously, it was incredible)

  5. Oh man, I want a whole series of just the small stories!
Bunny and striking it out on her own.
Witchdoctor and the curse of 2nd place
    Brazil… everything about Brazil!
    The evolution of brushless motors!

  6. Member of the Bloodsport team here! This is an awesome video. I would definitely recommend you check out NHRL and other smaller bot tournaments, its not that hard or expensive to even fight robots yourself! And if you ever wanna see a Battlebot up close, let me know.

  7. If you want more robot combat, check out NHRL. Smaller weight classes but more competitive. Most of the battlebots builders compete and build. We also have 7 competitions a year, and a huge competitor pool.

  8. I said out loud "wait what do you mean" so many times, with increasing desperation, after you mention a wild thing happening but then immediately move on to another wild thing happening

  9. I don't know Mikey, watching robots fight to the death for our amusement sounds like something that'll come back to bite us in our fleshy backsides when the cyborgs take over the Earth.

  10. Hey! Actual Battlebots competitor here! (I’m with the WCVII competitor, Horizon!)
This is such an incredible video, and it brings me so much joy to see this wonderful sport being introduced so passionately to a new audience. ❤ it’s stuff like this that’ll get new eyes on the sport, and inspire new generations of builders to come❤️

  11. A fiine analysis and no points deducted for the off topic subject. I recently saw a couple of series of BattleBots on Netflix here ithe UK. Essentially identical to Robot Wars (I have watched for years but have no recollection of the Clarkson version!). Both have the same good points for me – the stories of the makers, the good attitiude of (most of) the contestants and….well the fights. For me Battlerbots loses a couple points with the presenters, but then sport coat wearing white male commentator duos are not a thing here – I know them only as a cliche from The Simpsons etc. And should I know who the big shouty guy is?? Sorry but I don't.

  12. The Gladiators comparison for early Robot Wars is a good one, but its worth noting that the format only stuck for 2 seasons – the other 10 seasons were pretty much all combat.

  13. When I watched this when it first came out on nebula, I immediately started watching BattleBots.

I finished the latest season, and have been going back and watching all the other episodes.

Thank you for getting me into a sport

  14. You forgot about the most dominant bot that had ever been seen in Battlebots. Bite Force.

They originally were going to name their bot "Chomp" but the name was already taken. Bite Force competed in the new seasons 1-4 and during that time they had only 1 loss. The bot they lost to? It was named Chomp. And it was complete luck that they won that match.

  15. Great video, Mikey. When I was a kid, I used to watch the old Comedy Central run with my brother and dad. It's been fun to return to the show after all these years. About halfway through the first new season on Max.

  16. I was actually at the UK Robot Wars event where the self-righting mechanism was featured for the first time. Considering that the previous year flipping an opponent was considered to be a knock out move, the emotion in the room when there was suddenly a competitor invulnerable to that meta-move was quite a thing to experience.

  17. This channel is truly a gift. Every time I give Mikey even minutes of time he manages to find ways to change my life for the better. Even with Battlebots, which, at the end of this video, turns out wasn’t even a challenge for him to do. Love you all, FilmJoy!

  18. I am an avid robot combat fan and this video reminded me why I love this show so freaking much. I've met many of the teams from the show as well as made my own 1lb robots that I fight on a semi-monthly basis. I've made many friends through this sport as well as brought people together through it. I vividly remember watching all of season one in a single day and getting my whole family hooked. I remember buying the toys that hexbug had made. I remember going to see my first IRL robot fights and wanting to build them.
This sport is just amazing! Theres no mens or womens divisions. anyone and everyone can fight regardless of age, skill, intelligence, you name it.
    I LOVE BATTLEBOTS SO MUCH!!!
