The ending of Elden Ring that pertains to Ranni’s questline is aparently grossly mistranslated in the English cutscenes, the Japanese translation of Ranni’s lines completely changes her motives from an evil witch to someone benevolently guiding the Lands Between to a better future. It’s unclear how this translation managed to slip through to the final release, but either way to fully understand Ranni the Witch and her quest, we need to look to the original writing.

I'm also intrigued by the absence of the sun and any praise for it, lol.
Dark Souls tie in? Ok, I'll leave now.
Unsure if it's just me, but I've never been bothered by literal translations. Sure, it's at times a bit rough, and somewhat awkward without context of knowing the delivery is in fact from a translation. However, the preservation of meaning has something I've personally preferred.
So, basically, Sekiro's good ending?
AHH now it makes sense, especially that last line in the ending was referring to the journey "we" as in the players and Ranni are going to take together. So that means that looming moon that appears when Marika's body starts to disintegrate is actually a portal type thing that will take Ranni and the player far away into the stars. Now it makes much more sense, honestly how could they fuck up the translation so bad in this game where almost every little detail is scrutinized and examined for lore implications. At least I know now that Ranni is essentially the best ending IMO
Don’t matter, this is the ending we got and Ranni is still a douchebag…
Overall, Elden Ring kinda petered out at the end, and dropped the ball with the endings. Only the Frenzied Flame ending felt like at actual resolution to anything. Ranni's ending was basically a mid-2000 era wallpaper and not much else (it also kinda felt off, but this video addresses that), and all other endings effectively recolored variations.
Elden Ring did a lot of things well, but some things are just… bad.
Shes trying to keep it away because people can tamper with it and cause the shattering, but it was Ranni's actions of stealing and rune of death and murdering Godwyn?
I'm very surprised to hear that a lot of people thought Ronnie was a villain I was under the impression from the very beginning that Ronnie was more of a hero because from the age of stars ending that I interpreted it made it sound that having the age of stars allowed free will to occur in the lands between because the golden order and America stifled Free Will and made it so that things would happen only if they allowed it only allowing death to inhabit one being etc etc
Not even once did I think Ranni ending is dark. The behaviour through out the game and even the bad translations indicate that she started a world where people have the freedom of choice and beliefs. A world of darkness (as in unknown) that will take 1000 years to sort out, but never the less a world for everyone. So no, for me this changes NOTHING …
Again, if you FOLLOW all Ranni's interactions you already know about her plans long before reaching the ending .. Not sure why would people get confused. Plus it's the classic topic/ending, of humanity ditching all GODS in favor of free will and self-discovery.
Ranni ending = good ending.
Hope Miyazaki hears about this one.
This only cements age of stars as the best possible ending.
Mis-translation or not. Ranni's ending is still my favorite out of all of em.
Well this made me go from questioning if I did the right ending for my first playthrough to thinking that this is the best option
Always knew she was sus
I just came here to dislike the video because of your vague title
She's an anti hero in my book, willing to get her hands dirty if it means a better outcome overall. Personally though, I've set my first playthrough on a quest to entirely destroy the current golden order so lord of frenzied flame it is.
I heard one person say when merika say all the golden trees in the elden beasts boss room she realized all the souls going into the erdtree were only going to fuel the greater wills power. She shattered the elden ring to stop the flow and maybe even took Godfrey grace to save him from the fate of being sealed away in the tree.
I think what ranni is saying here is that she can't stop souls from being a part of this cycle but she can move "the order" far away, To her dark moon lord, where no one can hurt them.
At first when i completed her quest i thought ahh she will be a good choice cuz she means well and the ending lines i was like SHIIII i messed up picking her… Thx for cleared these things up. I knew she was a good pick.
Thank you.
From personal experience and watching lore vids I figured her ending was an ending of the concept of destiny considering that was her arc
Almost every item description in DS3 had some sort of translation mistakes. Now new ones are coming out of Elden Ring. This really feels like a waste of time.
This confuses me. I got this ending. The conclusions people are drawing with this new japanese translation are just the impression i got from the initial English version. I'm not saying the current translation is perfect, but i never thought she was suppressing emotions or anything and I felt like it was pretty clearly a good ending.
Honestly even mistranslated I thought Rannis Endgame and talk about the journey and the age of the stars was more saying
Every living being including us will journey into the cosmos to create a new realm among the stars and we basically transcend into celestial beings.
But now that we know the real translation its honestly even better than I would've thought.
Its just ashame Blaidd couldn't be around with us….
This makes so much more sense for her character. She hated the golden order and sought to overthrow it, hence her connection to the black knife assassins and the night of black knives. I sincerely hope that Fromsoft gets her voice actress back and rerecords these lines in a more clear and better translated version.
I mean, mistranslated or not its clear that Ranni's ending is the best. A 1000 journey under this wisdom of the moon doesn't even sound bad.
Now if only there were a way to get From to patch a corrected translation
arh, sooo ranni is a psyko who would doom all of the world to hell in the dub. good to know
😑 I thought it was clear but apparently people we're confused 🤔 on her ending 🤣
I must have failed my task successfully because I always though her ending was the *Good Ending
So, Ranni did steal the "rune of death" and eventualy killed godwyn by hands of assassins. so he started shattering and golden order. so she was the reason of fuckin with golden order. how she become a hero? @ziostorm
I just realized you beat her dad's ass to get with the waifu, lmao, stay classy miyazaki.
That's such a huge difference, a literal 180 from the English version. I honestly hope they fix it, it's almost criminal to leave it how it is.
The unfortunate part for me, is that you can save Melina with the lord of frenzied flame, but ultimately destroy the lands between. But you can reverse the effect after saving Melina, by using the Miquella needle in front of the Dragonlord in Crumbling Farum. This allows you to reverse the effect of the frenzied flame, and get whatever ending you want.
I did that and hoped Melina would have some kind of dialogue after the stars ending. In my opinion this was the "proper" ending, but yeah this translation makes it a bit weird
Am I the only one who now feels like they can't trust ANY of the English translation? Like, I'm fluent in Japanese, but similarly to Bloodborne and Dark Souls, this game is so drenched in Western fantasy that it felt more natural to me to play them in English. I kind of just trusted the translation team to get everything right, but this is a pretty gigantic fuck up and makes me very curious about everything else in the game.
Your use of Metroid music is extremely pleasing
I always thought her ending was the neutral ending, or just taking it into a different direction. I prefer the perfect order ending, where you close out all of the other beings and gods, but I do like Ranni too.
holy crap they definety need to redo the voice lines, this is heresy
