The Downbeat Podcast – Mario Duplantier (GOJIRA)

My guest this week is none other than Mario Duplantier of French metal titans GOJIRA. One of my favourite bands and drummers of all time, he spilled insane and humble knowledge about everything it takes to get to his level as a musician. We caught up before their INSANE show in support of their latest album Fortitude to talk about everything from drums and practicing to jamming with James Hetfield and stage fright. It was an inspirational chat and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

  1. 25 seconds and dude still fucking talks to himself about his name in the most boring way. Wtf is this crap. Next time put an ad there, at least there's a chance it might be interesting

  2. The first time I listened to gojira I didn't get it. The vocals and blast beats reminded me of the death metal I didn't like. But then it clicked. Because I'm a stubborn music listener. Now gojira is among my favorite bands. I've seen them now live a few times and they are excellent. Seen them in a 3000 seat club. Best concert ever because they sang adoration for none live with Randy on vocals in Richmond VA.

  3. This was such a good podcast. I could listen to Mario talking for hours.

I caught his drumstick at the Lyon gig a week ago, I have a relic of the metronome god himself !

  5. A genuinely foolish take.
    Full of coping and excuses.
" It's not about his drumming" is not a very good defensive someone who's a drummer.

I genuinely consider Lars Ulrich the worst professional musician that I can think of.
Only second to Daron Malakian's live playing when he was SUPER on drugs

(Yes this is absolutely what the entire conversation was about I'm not picking a specific moment to harp on. Not at ALL!)

  6. Got tickets to see Gojira in August with Mastodon and Lorna Shore in Portland Maine. Wish I could tell them Dimillos best seafood anywhere. Those Maine Lobsters 🦞

  7. Such an inspiration, very human person, even if I'm not a drummer, I'll never stop to try to slap that The Art of Dying intro with my hands, trying to coordinate it with my feets…

  8. The man is like a shaolin monk. Huge respect for the war machine that Mario is . I have to say as a long ass time fan , i miss the heavily "Morbid Angel" influenced GOJIRA of old . Last time I saw them (Manchester UK) i didn't feel the raw power i had experienced prweviously (seen them 8 times now) and i miss the technical death metal Gojira . Anyway , who cares what i think ? They finally have the recognition they always deserved and Mario is a living legend . Allez les petits gars , on continue d'assurer et de representer le metal francais . Peace

  9. This was an awesome watch. Going to be seeing Gojira in Austin in April, plan on catching you guys at Welcome to Rockville in May in Daytona which will be my first music festival, and I also have tickets for Metallica in Arlington, TX for August. Great shows coming up.
