50 years ago a legend was born, a race that remains the toughest and craziest test of a team in world sport. 17 crews set out from Portsmouth, UK, for the first Whitbread Round the World Race in September 1973.
This year we celebrate a half-century of adventures, drama, unbelievable stories and spectacular images. This is a race of legendary larger-than-life characters, humans at one with nature, battling time and the elements to ride the wind as they race around the world.

Fantastic
Wow what changes have happened in the sport over the years, thank you for sharing this bit of history.
So glad this historic race was caught on film so we have these scenes today, what a difference in technology over the years, but some things never change: the repairs at sea, the skill and the determination
did i hear that right the French boat had a uranium keel??????
Woo hoo! Here’s to the next fifty years!
Keel of uranium? 😳
So happy the reporting has changed. My goodness – people go overboard and it’s like nothing happened. Love the OBRs today!
