  1. Great info, thanks! Will shellac primers absorb into engineered woods like MDF and hardboard? A challenge when using MDF is getting the ends to seal so the finish is consistent. Water based tends to just soak into MDF.

  2. Shellac is my favorite also cause you can recoat it many times and the odor is not as strong as lacquer and I even tint shellac, being a furniture repair guy since 1977. Like the way you told of shellac history too.

  5. Zinsser makes great primers! 123 sticks to about anything and is good even on rusty metal! And the shellac primers are great at sealing out smoke and as a stain conditioner. Thanks for the video, sealers and primers can make all the difference in the world.

  6. So just days ago I was at Lowes and the paint dept said to go with oil based primer for a mdf subwoofer box I'm building. I sanded the applied the primer. Sanded and just yesterday applied the first coat of 100% acrylic paint. There is some spackling that I guess I didn't sand down well enough. Should I sand it all down to the mdf to smooth out and use a water base primer ?

  7. Shellac can be used under another finish only if it is de-waxed shellac (Zinsser Seal Coat). Regular Bullseye shellac has wax which will cause problems with adhesion of top coats other than more shellac.

  8. I have a small garage project…painting concrete block and T-111 siding (used on an interior back wall). There are paints that include primer, sooooo…could I mix primer with paint (which I already have) in a bucket and paint with that? Beauty is not what's important; protection is.
