  2. I'm not a dad, but my favorite games to play when I'm not necessarily gonna have time to be at the PC are Civilization (my favorite is IV with mods), Football Manager, and any of the Paradox games (Hearts of Iron, Stellaris, Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis etc etc) or Total War series.
Honorable mention to Farm Manager 2018 which got me through a post-op period when I was stuck in bed with quite a bit of pain for a few weeks and didn't quite have the ability to focus on any of the others, it's such a relaxing, non-intensive game.

  3. I'd recommend Jagged Alliance 2 (if you feel like an old school challenge), Tropico (quite literally any of them apart from 2), Cities Skylines, The Patrician/Port Royale, Battletech, 4X titles in general (Civilization, Age of Wonders, Endless Space/Legend, Thea: The Awakening, Fallen Enchantress).

Basically, anything that wants you to pause and think. All the best to all the parents out there.

  4. Have you ever played any of the Gary Grigsby games? War in the Pacific (AE Edition) or War in the East (1 or2)? Two of the best war games ever imo alongside of many that you have recommended in this vid.

  5. Something maybe not in your area of interest, but since my daughter was born, I do enjoy the following games as you can step any time:

    Factorio
    Prision Architect
    Kingdoms and Castle

Lots of good mentions in the comments as well!

  6. Good idea for a video 🙂

Many of my distractor-friendly favourites were already mentioned in the comments, including beloved Jagged Alliance 2 (preferably with Urban Chaos and 1.13 mods combined). I could add Kerbal Space Program, Silent Hunter III, and Command: MO, where you can also pause and compress time as you see fit. And speaking of Paradox grand strategy games, Victoria II, as we are waiting for Victoria III to be released soon.

  7. I play a lot of Company of Heroes, particularly with the Blitzkrieg mod. I used to play the Warhammer 40k series a lot as well. I still play Freelancer with the Discovery mod and I've just gotten Ultimate Admirals – Dreadnoughts.

  8. Project Zomboid is a great recommendation. what you described about 7 days to die can be pretty much said word for word in regards to Zomboid with the only real difference being the isometric graphics as opposed to the first person perspective. I personally like it over 7 days to die

Subnautica. single player so you can pause any time. a very relaxing and fun game about surviving in the ocean. lots of nice relaxing swimming amidst beautiful bio-florescent flora and fauna in a beautiful map. as a new dad you probably wont get too much time to go diving so its the next best thing.

Factorio. while it does have a strong addictive "just one more building" element which earned the game the nickname Cracktorio theres nothing to prevent you from pausing the game. and you can even play in peaceful mode which completely disables the enemies so you can even feel confident walking away without pausing. and just plan ahead

  9. Not a Dad but the same things you mentioned apply for some simulators. For example, the Silent Hunter series. It's a slow, brainheavy game that you can stop whenever you want/need. And just like how it works with XCom, while you are away you can think about your next move.
Euro Truck Simulator also comes to mind.
The CK series is a good example too

  10. XCOM: Is so good but my luck is so bad
    Terra Envicta: never played
    Surviving Mars: is fun
ICBM: I am waiting for Nuclear War Simulator
7 Days to Die: Sandbox survivals are ok but 7DTD is so fun if you have friends.

    Games I'd Recommend:
    Valor & Victory
    Combat Mission
    City Skylines
    Blood Bowl 2

  12. xcom2 – yes, definitely
terra invicta – yesn't… if you have a complex plan, it takes longer to reorient yourself
surviving mars – agreed, but I prefer per aspera
icbm – interesting… does it have a real time like defcon? super long game on the lowest timescale
7 days to die – survival games get boring for me very quick, unfortunately. it is very time consuming, compared to other games
    stellaris – cool
avorion – cool, give starbase a try 🙂
    space engineer – yup
    stormworks – cool
    rimworld – true

games you can give a shot:
uboat (realtime = realtime… no pause required, unless in combat)
pathfinder games, with turn based game mode (replayability galore, good story and extremely long)
    civilization 4 and 5
endless space 2 (civ game, but in space and each race plays differently)
heat signature (quick starting game and short-ish missions)
baldur's gate 3 (my kid loves this game, and we can't wait for them to finish it)
    battletech (xcom but with mechs)
hardspace shipbreaker (nice zen-like game, with 15 min shifts)
banner saga trilogy (awesome story, mostly turn based)
the room 1 – 4 (cool puzzle game)
hearts of iron 4 – millenium dawn: a modern day mod
    phantom doctrine (xcom like game)

  13. This was a really interesting video. I'm by no means a dad, let alone soon to be one but I've still found this a really interesting video. It was nice to see your choices around such a topic.

  14. Turn based games are absolutely the way to go, but… I've really struggled to find time to game with very young kids.
When they're asleep, there's house chores to do and even after that, I need to sleep at some point otherwise I'm just a wreck. With my third child I've pretty much said goodbye to free time until he's old enough for school. :/

  15. That is interesting, but you are pretty much just cutting out the MP games.

Now how about games that you can play WITH your kid? For that I would suggest more city builders or resource management rather than the shooters and wargames that you clearly like best.

  16. This is a great list, I played most of these when "off shift" as it were. The only ones I'd add are the simulation games like farm SIM, gold rush, Fishing Barents sea, X3, Eurotruck etc. All single player, stress free for the most part so a nice chilled game.

Plus my son now loves watching me play farming sim and Eurotruck as he is obsessed with lorry's and tractors so win win 😁
