Throughout history, ships have disappeared at sea, seemingly vanished without a trace. Today let’s look at five ships which never arrived at their destinations; White Star Lines’ SS Naronic, Hans Hedtoft, Blue Anchor Lines’ Waratah and the Collins Line paddle steamer Pacific.

Hey Mike, I realize that this ship never experienced any REAL calamity at sea, but do you think that there's any chance we could get a brief documentary on the SS City of New York 1888 (later SS New York, the ship that was moored next to Oceanic and almost collided with RMS Titanic on it's maiden voyage while leaving port)? I've always loved the look of that ship when it was first built. It ended up looking like an old homely cargo ship in 1912.

  3. I worked on the USCGC Taney a museum ship in Baltimore that was the sister ship of the USCGC Campbell. The Treasury class Cutters were designed to sail through incredibly rough seas so if the Campbell couldn't reach the Hans Hedtoft then she must have been lost in truly appalling conditions

  4. It's not often mwentioned that teh Waratah was the last of several vessels to bear that name, many of which had been wrecked or lost. And while I won't say that "the name is cursed," I do feel that its re-use showed a highly negligent form of bad taste. I've always questioned whether any company unwise enough to reuse such a name had the good judgment to build and/or operate the ship properly, to begin with.

  5. For a part 2, there's the Brazilian ship atalaia, built by the germans in 1910 and confiscated by Brazil in 1917. It was operated by lloyd brasileiro in it's remaining lifetime. In the 10th of may 1941, she departed from Maputo mozambique, bound to buenos Aires with 66 crewmembers aboard. In the 21st of may, the ship entered a huge storm near gough island, that It didnt leave at all. Before vanishing, the ship sent 2 messages, here they are: 5/21/41 0830GMT – WE LOST HELM. THERE IS NO HOPE FOR REPAIRS. THREE WHALING BOATS BROKEN VIOLENT SEA. WE HAVE ONLY SMALL FLOATING. SIXTY-SIX PEOPLE ON BOARD. Then, came the final message, a Very dark one. 21/05/41 1335GMT “NO HOPE. ALL LOST. FAREWELL". The ship then went silent, never to be heard from again.

  6. The loss of Hans Hedtoft was a major national scandal for years, with many cover ups and political crisis.
    Btw. The politician that were lost in her sinking, Augo Lynge, had been the most critical in the parliament about her construction and sailing in the winter.
    A union of captain's were asked about exactly that and spoke against it but, after heavy political pressure they, sadly, changed their mind.

  7. Is it really a disappearance if they are able to communicate that they are sinking? That sounds pretty straightforward. Is it maritime parlance? Like unless there is a witness then it's a disappearance?

  9. I was unfamiliar with all of these lost ships other than Pacific. Is it ironic that the Pacific was lost in the Atlantic. There’s something about the complete disappearance of a ship and everyone aboard that almost gives me a panic attack, thinking about how thousands of family and friends went to their graves never knowing what happened. The fate of those lost known but to God. Also another ship lost due to iceberg impact on her maiden voyage? Wasn’t one sufficient.

  10. Waratah seems like another victim of the Agulhas current to me. I've heard horror stories about that part of the sea along the lines of "massive rips like holes in the ocean that can swallow ships." Is there anything to that, or no?

  11. There is nothing "happy and healthy" about cattle ships, from the cattle's point of view, regardless of the "accommodations" one ship has compared to another. Period. They are no different than slave ships. Anyone care to debate me on that point? Anybody? Bueller … ???

  12. Indeed, ship loss continues today. Some vanishings (perhaps many) are modern piracy: Turn off the transponder, change the paint scheme, add a new name, forge some papers. Presto! Ship and cargo continue and a large insurance claim is filed. However, genuine sinkings do occur. I listened to one. In the early 70's, I was in the USN aboard a fleet ballistic missile submarine in the Pacific. A typhoon intersected our patrol route for a few days. The strong weather reached unexpected depths, but we had little concern. On sonar we heard other vessels laboring in the storm. Engines raced when screws broke water, then bogged to a near stall when the propeller plunged deep. A couple of days after we first recognized a particular sonar contact, it broke up and sank. The sounds of rending metal and collapsing tanks is quite distinct. The event was over quickly. The storm raged on. I've always wondered about that ship's identity and the human loss.

  13. I hope one day underwater automated sonar equipped vehicles become so cheap to operate that we can send them on long range patrols to map the ocean floor. No need for multi million dollar expeditions just to run out of time or be pushed back from weather.

    I mean if we can make nuclear doomsday automous torpedoes…

  14. EVERY single time anyone says that a ship is ‘unsinkable’ , the mo fo ALWAYS sinks!! I wouldn’t get on a ship going across the Atlantic, or anywhere else come to think about it!! The seas have changed since the 50’s/ 60’s/ 70’s…from there the seas began to change. Higher waves and more intense storms…not in a million would I get on a ship going anywhere

  17. Hello, I have been thinking and I wanted to know if you know of the paddle steamer Waverley based in Glasgow.
    She is the last sea going paddle steamer left and think she could make a great video.
    She is currently waiting on dry docking but they need to raise the funds first and your platform could really help them on their way.

  18. The Northwestern, an Alaskan fishing vessel seen on Deadliest Catch took a rogue wave on her bow is one episode, major visible damage done to the steel. If the Waratah was hit by one it could have been even more catastrophic than a capsizing.
