  1. I read Gallant as well. I actually think the book lost
most of its allure at about the half way point when the villain came into prominence. It immediately got less scary and then at some point it became a bit of a rush to the end.

I really enjoyed the main character, the atmosphere and the depiction of ghosts. I would have preferred that it just stay a moody, atmospheric ghost story with no plot.

I also knew it was a middle grade, so my expectations were in check on that front too.

  2. You might like the Barrier Witch Trilogy by Amir Lane (nonbinary author). It is urban fantasy or modern fantasy in that magic is something society is aware of and they have organizations in place to solve magic mysteries.

  3. To this day I don't understand how The Spanish Love Deception won a Goodreads award- or how it showed up on so so so many people's favorite read/romance. Like….?????Why? What did Aaron Blackburn do? Besides existing with his blue eyes

  4. The only thing I liked about Gallant was that it was short 😅 I think I'm gonna give Ninth House one more chance bc it is possible I just wasn't in the mood for it when I tried to read it…and I also accidentally own three copies of it, so I really don't wanna just DNF it

  5. I’m so privileged to have parents who will always support me and care for me – and I also hate plot lines where characters just deliberately try to pretend as if they don’t have that privilege. It’s like they’re trying to prove something or cosplay a type of independence/suffering that’s just exhausting.

  6. wow bummer Gallant was so bad… ooh does the suitcase have a body in it?? Oh I hate when they make villains fat and spend the whole book ridiculing their weight.God your editing is so funny!! Oh yeah I hate that trope too! It's okay to accept help!!! A really popular book that I knew wasn't gonna work for me was Detransition Baby. I love a trans novel, but I could tell me and her weren't gonna get along, and we sure didn't! The most universally hated book I read this year was Life After Death by Sister Souljah. It's the sequel to the Coldest Winter Ever, which was incredible, but I can see why Life After Death was hated so much. Homophobic, anti-abortion, bestiality, super religious agenda…but to be honest, while the bulk of the book was atrocious, the final quarter was one of my favorite things I've read all year. If you can stomach the horrendous beginning and middle, the end is well worth it!!

  7. I regret reading An Arrow to the Moon. I felt like i was forcing myself through it hoping for an ending that would pay off and then it…. Didn’t. I hated it ahahaha. Parts of the ending were sweet, the way the kids ended up in the sky and all that but the way the families just forgot about them and had no consequences or growth or anything from all the shitty things they did left me so incandescent 😅

  8. The only book here I read is Ninth House and I actually liked it :') But I'm not going to waste my time with the other books. Even though I am very curious about Gallant and Book of Night, I try to resist the temptation 🐢✨️

Crossing my fingers that y'all enjoy the next book by LeGrand. I didn't like furyborn enough to continue the series and the synopsis to Extasia makes me mad. Though I am still very tempted by Sawkill Girls.

Not sure if y'all have it on your radar but I read Lore by Alexandra Braken which came out last year and that was really disappointing.

  9. I knew you hated Eleanor Oliphant but didn't know why, now I have my answer.
I'm sorry you found it boring and DNF'ed it. This was one of the most important reads for me because I saw a lot of myself pre-teraphy in Eleonor.
At least you didn't hate the book as a whole, the character and its journey.
Not liking the writing of a book and considering it boring is particular to each one of us.

  10. Gallant was also one of my most anticipated releases of last year and left me SO disappointed. I was enjoying the writing and atmosphere for the first half until i realized there had been absolutely no plot development and it was just downhill from there. There was so much potential, it hurts to think about lol

  11. Unrelated to the books, but I need to get this off my chest. I love the content as always, love the (self) roasts, love the (literal) dad-jokes, love the Akasha-cameo's… As someone who deals with trauma with humor, you crack me up and I often relate so much, which is really powerful. However, you also mention a some really heavy things here, and I know from experience that humor can make this shit bearable, but not easy. Jokes aside, I hope you know you're NOT a disappointment, you're valuable, important and loved. Sending some virtual love and positivity, and please keep up the fantastic content!

  12. I had no interest in House of Night either, although I did some of her previous works, the things I've heard about House of Night does not make me want to read it lol. So don't trust Jan anymore 😂🤣

  13. I came back to this video today to watch the section about Jackal, since I've finally gotten around to read the book I've been supposed to read for the last 3 months and didn't want to watch the video about it when I was going to read the book. Well, I read the book, and I agree with Jessie, the book was really good until they went into the forest that last time and the predictable ending I had kind of figured out …. happened but then … uhm … the psychological horror turned into a weird kind of fantasy for a few pages there and …. ? I think that's how I can best sum up my thoughts on the ending, just "?". But then, after the ending, in lets call it the epilogue, it's treated like everything makes sense? Is there a book with a few extra chapters somewhere? Do I have the wrong edition?
