I still scroll, but now when I see blatant “oh you’re not teaching me something, you’re selling g me something” a lot sooner and I’m able to block and move on. It’s def helped my headspace a lot.
Custom slip covers cost a fortune but nothing can change the look of a room as effectively and delightfully. So far I have successfully slipped covered a chair! Time and money found by not scrolling and shopping. The couch is next….
Some products I'm Trying to finish in the next couple of weeks/month:
– body wash
– shampoo
– conditioner
– brow tint
The best part is that I dont have to buy any new things to replace any of this.
– new shower gel (gifted)
– shampoo/conditioner ( i have a TON of samples collected from hotels- MUST use ALL before purchasing new)
– perfect brow pencil that I neglected for way too long…

Wow! I'm 66 years old and I've NEVER worn makeup or lipstick or any beauty products in my life. I wash with soap and water, cut my own hair and use a vitamin C serum and moisturizer daily. My skin is beautiful. I would love to know how much money I've saved myself over all those years! Also, I don't feel like people think any less of me because I don't conform to female norms. In fact, if I ever showed up somewhere with makeup on my face people would probably freak out! Men don't wear makeup, why should we? I can't even imagine the chemicals absorbed over 50 years of smearing that stuff on your face.
This hit on so many levels!! Thank you!!!
I haven't found a way to track wears without hating it and it ruining my experience with getting dressed. I do bi-monthly seasonal "capsule" wardrobes, it helps with rediscovering pieces, but doesn't give insights like cost-per-wear. Which is a shame really, because the cold hard numbers would surely help me.
I will also be very honest, I almost feel like I'm heading towards a self-improvement burn-out. I was so excited to make plans and goals for 2025, but now I feel unable to go through the mental process of defining things concretely.
The hobbies one is the main challenge for me as someone with adhd, I do definitely read and get stuff from the library, but I want to ping-pong to different things like a tiger trapped in an enclosure too often. I am definitely figuring it out by going off on a wander and bringing a thermo with hot water so I can make my own drinks when on the journey so I don't impulsively buy a hot drink when about simply because it's there. Sadly few free places to linger about in my city
shawna please consider showing us your digitized wardrobe! it sounds like such a helpful project and would love your expert guidance ☺️
Shawna, I wanted to thank you for your videos and thoughtful insights regarding overconsumption and consumption habits overall. This video really resonated with me and helped as a motivation for my first no buy year (at least starting with makeup). Overall you have helped me question my decisions and the motivations behind them, specially regarding the dopamine hits and the concept of our fantasy selves. Can’t thank you enough, really!! Hope you have a great year 🩷
I like the idea of working on being content with the things I own. Your videos are always so thought provoking! Thank you
8:57 it took me awhile to realize that connection, make up can be found easily on the cheaper end and they release something new every day it is sooo easy to just see how much little glosses and eyeshadows I piled up even when i thought i was being selective, you really only need one or two things with makeup it’s crazy compared to what the marketing gets us to buy weekly
I appreciate these videos sooo much!!! I appreciate that it’s free content too ❤ thank you this is valuable info to share xx
So relieved I hate shopping: the crowds, the noise, the stuffy atmosphere. Went overboard with art supplies but thank God, I stuck 90% with quality stuff I will use for the next…4-5 years (not sure about these 10 bottles of watercolor inks, though 🤨).
Getting so sick of watching tv and scrolling on my phone in the evenings, I’m starting to take out the things that I ALREADY OWN to enjoy and have fun with ie a card game or puzzle or musical instrument. I expect this will prevent me from buying influenced things AND help me with going to bed at a reasonable hour which is even better for my health!
i just wanted to say thanks cuz i always fail doing a no buy, but this year i started with jan no buy then parameters for low buy which seems more doable for sustained change
I allow myself to have one backup of each skincare product and that is only because I finally have skincare products that have become staples. I know I will use them, and I only buy a new “backup” once I open the backup I already own. I don’t need multiple backups laying around, I just don’t
Absolutely… makeup takes forever to use up. It's ridiculous what people have.
I really appreciate these videos. It has been hard to find quality videos with good insight on our condumer culture. A lot of the videos I come across are preachy. I am going back to long form videos because I don't like Tiktok formats.
I am so tired of influencers say:
"I'm obsessed", "She is…" when referrimg to inaminate objects, and the list goes on.
There used to be an amazing show called Street Cents that reviewed consumer products in a systematic way and it aired on CBC. It was such a great show and hope show runners bring the format back some day. It was free of sponsorship so it was unbiased.
do you happen to have a template for digitizing your wardrobe?🥰
This video just popped up and I'm so excited to follow your journey along with my low-buy! Eeeee.
Great video! In 2016, I was on a really tight budget because I wasnt making much and and that launched me into a bit of a minimalist stage and I am so thankful for that time, being forced to consider every purchase. It helped me to develop the skills to prioritize what matters most and it's how I still function today. (Not to mention my mother who taught me how to use coupons and find the best deal)
its really nice to hear about how long this process has taken. its hard to not feel like it should be an overnight thing!

I no longer buy hair conditioners that you rinse out. I buy leave-in-conditioner.
Yes I do have 50 or more eyeshadow pallets that I never use.
People have to think, how many hours and how much do I get paid per hour at work to buy (waste money) on this product.
I relate to your story soo much, I’m in credit card debt because of it
I started feeling overwhelmed and even suffocated by all my belongings, especially my clothes and beauty/makeup collection when I was around 22-23. The feeling only got worse as I got older until I decided to declutter, donate, or even re-gift some of my belongings. I had so many clothes I could hardly fit them all in my closet, let alone wear them all. Choosing fun outfits to wear out or run errands went from feeling fun and expressive to a major chore. Slowly, I started wearing the same clothes over and over, opting for what's comfortable and familiar over what's stylish. Eventually, even my favorite vintage pieces that I had worn in previous years many times began to collect dust in the back of my closet. I knew I had to make conscious efforts when I moved to a smaller space and began finding all the clothes I forgot about when I was packing them in moving boxes. I'm 25 now and I still have some clothes left from my high school/early college days that I have held on to simply because I haven't outgrown them yet, or found any reason to declutter them, despite not wearing most of them. My beauty/makeup collection accumulated over the years thanks to social media, mainly influencers, constantly promoting new skincare/makeup to buy and try. I used to research a product for hours before buying when I was in high school, then I developed the habit of buy now and return later, which isn't a great habit to have. Committing to a low buy (practically a no buy) for 2025 is a major goal for me, I hope to not accumulate any more unnecessary/impulsive items and save more money for the future, not shopping.
TLDR; Accumulated too many clothes and too much skincare/beauty over the years. Finally decluttered in my mid-20s to save my bank account, sanity, and sense of style. Don't fall for the consumerism/influencer trap, always do your own research and make the choice that makes the most sense for you.
10:19 Could you talk more about that because, I mean, I have other hobbies (journalling, spending quality time with my husband, singing, writing poetry etc.), but NONE of them give me a dopamine hit like shopping does. Nothing else than shopping soothes my pain except for hugging my husband, and I can’t continuously hug him so I don’t feel so bad. What do I do?
