Back 4 Blood is set in a dystopian future when shooting zombies (known as “Ridden” in this setting) is as commonplace as cleaning one’s teeth, and the protagonists are a group of survivors who are just trying to make it through the day without having their necks snapped in two. You won’t feel emotionally involved in the story since it’s just a bunch of thinly disguised reasons to shoot zombies with your buddies, but that’s all the campaign’s four acts need. There are seven different “Cleaners” to control, and even though they’re all facing certain death, the game maintains a cheerful tone. Karlee, the punk rocker prone to blame teammates for getting in the middle of her shots when friendly fire occurs, is my favourite character. When my buddies and I were locked up in a bar and had to mow off hundreds of zombies while listening to Black Betty by Spiderbait on the jukebox, I was utterly immersed in Back 4 Blood’s goofy, joyful atmosphere.
