Lol GW2, you can sit there and try to grind your way to the merchandise out the cash shop BUT, the way the market fluctuates on the cash shop, you'll never have enough premium currency to afford what you want. It's always a carrot on a stick.
This makes me sad. There's a GDC video that covers this exact topic and makes some very good point and yet no one brings it up!
The grindier the MMO, the more it suffers later in its life. Without means of making end game players run old content, the longer an MMO{ is out, the more solo the leveling experience will become.
GW2 yes, free trial. And the whole time you get flashy, irritating things urging you to subscribe, and urging you to buy expansions. At least FFXIV free trial is free without nagging the player about it. But I'm confused about this "guild wars 2 story." What story? I got to 12 and everything was "help this NPC by killing bandits" etc. What story? And steam yes, they don't know.. basically anything. I stay away from steam like if it's worse then covid. After all this time, I still don't really know why anyone thinks putting an extra company and it's proprietary software between you and the game you want to play is a good idea.
bruh you pause so much you make me just find the actual video to watch it

I sometimes like to imagine, cause to me FFXIV is like, 80% story 20% whatever else you wanna do. But imagine then if the game was designed and played like Dragon Age was, many times i feel like that cause i spend so much with my fellow Scions, it could just as well has been played like Dragon Age, plus I'd be allowed to romance Estinien 🥵
My 2 cents as a solo player. I don't play MMORPGs because they're MMOs, but because they're RPGs. Simply put, certain MMORPGs are just too good not to play, even to the point of being willing to endure a certain amount of forced group content. Given a choice I would obviously rather not have to queue 30 mins for a trial that I need to complete before I can even progress in the story, but some stories are just too good to leave by the wayside. Personally I think the duty support recently implemented in FFXIV is a really good idea – the multiplayer aspect is retained for those who prefer it and even play the game for that aspect, whilst giving an alternate option to people like me who prefer not to get slapped for watching cutscenes and like to appreciate dungeons for what they are rather than racing through as quickly as possible. Also having the opportunity to complete dungeons with notable NPCs is, for me, just wonderful, not to mention more lore-friendly.
FFXIV is the first mmo where I joined in on the online aspects at all.
I didn't even know GW2 had dungeons until I watched videos comparing it to FFXIV…
Boooooooooba
My FC are all still going through the MSQ, so playing with friends usually means sitting AFK while you wait for people to unlock things.
Playing with people in mmorpgs is often like how small children play at the playground, when they're done, their parents will ask if they know the name of the kids they played with, and the kids will have completely forgotten to even ask
Just because it's an MMORPG doesn't forbid you from RP'ing a loner.
To me MMO's are in a weird place as there is conflicting ideals within them that get juxtaposed. It's meant to be Massively Multiplayer in these games, but what you find is "small, niche groups" rather than huge swathes of communities ala New World. And a core component of that imo is skill differences in people. You will go into this "new shiny MMO" with all your mates, quickly to realise X friend doesn't have the time, Y friend is no where near as good or versed at the mechanics of the game or controls as they claimed, Z is steam rolling ahead of everyone because they are unemployed and the rest of you aren't so don't have the same time to put in. All these seemingly little/extra things are what causes people to just play by themselves for hte most part at their own pace within their own skill bracket. Honestly, having your irl friends playing an MMO with you is more stress than you could ever imagine, for the aforementiuoned reasons.
TL;DR – Skill disparity between friends = more solo play (searching for others of similar Skill/Amount-of-time-to-play level)
Edit: Secondly, another 2 things seemingly in conflict with each other is an abundance of both anti social people playing (mostly solo) and actually social people playing at the same time. Naturally these clashes will exists. "I've always done this by myself just fine" vs "I've only done this in groups"
My overall impression is that most MMO players are antisocial, which I will admit is probably inaccurate. I always try to organise voice chat in Discord for raids or whatever and people say "oh I'm too shy to speak" or "I'd rather not join" which indicates extreme introversion and poor social skills. Or it indicates a preference to not connect with others in the MMO genre. So I consider this video the exception rather than the rule.
The other day I played CC and got the same guy in my group 2 matches in a row. When he died, he kept spamming "thank you" in chat for the entire time he was dead. The second match in the starting booth we kinda fought with emotes and he kept spamming. After the match he messaged me that we should solve this disagreement with a duel. We met up at the pier and fought and now were friends – at least hes on my friends list now. I'm usually a loner in the game. But the fact that i can just choose to do an activity like pvp in the same game with my character and then have a unique interaction like this really is the beauty of an MMO or especially FFXIV
Zepla is talking like GW2 only has ugly glam and you need to buy outfits on the shop to look good lol. Couldn't be further from the thruth. There are so many awesome sets in in GW2 that you can just farm out by doing meta events or achievements or you get them by crafting and so on. That kind of stufff is actually my favorite part of guildwars
One of the big reasons I want the game I play to be populated is that I want the devs/ the publisher to make money off of it so that it development continues. No revenue, no game.
Zepla, are you drunk?
Honestly I don’t think being able to solo everything is what puts off a lot of old MMO gamers because people soloed most things even in EverQuest. Rather what I think it is is that, take ff14 for example, you don’t really benefit from playing with other people if it’s not absolutely required. If something is soloable it’s usually more efficient to solo it. This kind of kills the interdependence and need people used to have for each other.
Take something even as simple as the WoW starting zones, because people had to share quest mobs they would often group up to knock out the starting zone quests. It was faster, safer, and more efficient than fighting for them. FF14 completely removed this aspect by making quest mobs trivial and quick to kill, and by spawning the required quest mobs for each player.
hehe
Did you move back to a southern state? Sounding rather southern belle in this video. 😉
"Some people don't show any signs of pressure to do well"
