  1. I discovered Zemlinsky in my formative years, in the eighties, by a concert in LaMonnaie in Brussels: the Lyrische Symphonie. Prior to the concert, conductor Sylvain Camberling talked about Zemlinksy and his personality somehow sounded fascinating. Some years later, when we started having cd’s, I went out to buy it and by accident fell upon the Decca recording of Zeejungfrau by Chailly.
The love story has lasted until today.

  2. Zemlinsky's "Die Seejungfrau" (The Mermaid) is a symphonic fantasy inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale of the same name. Composed between 1902 and 1903, it stands as a testament to Zemlinsky's mastery of orchestral color and his ability to weave intricate musical narratives.

The piece begins with an ethereal introduction, where shimmering strings and woodwinds evoke the mysterious depths of the sea. As the music unfolds, Zemlinsky introduces a series of thematic motifs that represent the characters and events of the story. The mermaid herself is depicted through a haunting melody played by the strings, imbued with longing and melancholy.

Throughout the work, Zemlinsky demonstrates his command of orchestration, utilizing the full palette of the orchestra to create vivid sonic landscapes. The shimmering strings, the plaintive woodwinds, and the majestic brass all contribute to the rich tapestry of sound. In the climactic moments of the piece, the orchestra swells to a glorious crescendo, capturing the drama and emotion of the story.

One of the most striking aspects of "Die Seejungfrau" is its use of thematic development. Zemlinsky takes the basic motifs introduced at the beginning of the piece and subjects them to a series of transformations, exploring them from different angles and infusing them with new meaning. This creates a sense of unity and coherence throughout the work, as well as a deep emotional resonance.

The narrative arc of "Die Seejungfrau" follows the trajectory of Andersen's fairy tale, tracing the mermaid's journey from her underwater kingdom to the world above. Along the way, she encounters love, loss, and ultimately redemption. Zemlinsky captures the emotional depth of the story with sensitivity and nuance, allowing the music to speak directly to the listener's heart.

In the final moments of the piece, Zemlinsky brings the mermaid's journey to a transcendent conclusion. The music soars to dizzying heights, as the orchestra unleashes a torrent of sound that is both exhilarating and cathartic. In this moment, the mermaid's struggles are transformed into a triumph of the human spirit, and the listener is left with a sense of awe and wonder.

In conclusion, Zemlinsky's "Die Seejungfrau" is a masterpiece of orchestral storytelling. Through its vivid orchestration, thematic richness, and emotional depth, it transports the listener to a world of magic and wonder. It stands as a testament to Zemlinsky's genius as a composer and remains a beloved work of the orchestral repertoire.
