Gospel of John 8-23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.”
In the Gospel it says that the Magi saw the star ‘as it rose’ and ‘There in front of them was the star they had seen rising.’ Clearly the star was a sign that something unusual had happened, that someone special had been born. Also we can conclude that in between, they travelled in darkness and had to ask, seek and enquire.
The Magi can serve as models for us on our faith journey. They refused to be put off by difficulties and hardships. When they found Christ they offered Him gold, frankincense and myrrh. When we find Christ and offer our love to Him, He will help us to open up the treasures of goodness that lie buried inside us.
Having worshipped Christ, the Magi ‘returned to their own country by another route.’ This suggests not just a new geographical route but a new mentality. Having encountered Christ in His Word and Sacraments we too will travel through life by a different route. We will have different attitudes, different values and different goals.
