  1. I mean, let's say the ornithologists are deliberately trying to scare off newcomers because they don't want the competition. That means it really must be a difficult job to get into.

I used to be a boiler operator, I've never heard a boiler operator try to scare someone off from becoming a boiler operator. Steam power is still one of the most efficient ways to power a lot of industrial machinery, so you can get a job pretty much anywhere. Same for welding, a good welder can always find work somewhere.

I've heard from lots of nurses why you shouldn't be a nurse, but it was never "It's hard to become a nurse and get a job," it's always "Being a nurse is a difficult job."

  3. My brother is an historian.
From finishing his doctorate to landing a permanent paid position with a University took 14 years.
All jobs before that were research contracts for 1-2 years at most, so he was working AND job hunting at the same time for a decade and a half.
The permanent job involves teaching history at college so he essentially learned a career where the only decent job in it is to teach it, thus perpetuating a cycle of 'why bother?'.

  4. So either he changed his profile picture.

Or this was the universe specially baiting ME as a person, as a shoebill stork is my 3rd favourite animal.
So to see another human even know they exist was wild😂

  5. Yea, I wanted to get into making games, eventually wanting to work for one of the big boys, Blizzard or Bethesda. After doing the research I found the same things that Zach did. A bunch of people just saying "Don't." And seeing how the video games landscape became in the last few years, I'm glad I didn't.

  6. Zach got dangerously close to understanding the truth of birds. They all were killed during the cold war and replaced with spy drones. No living birds exist today.

  7. Ornithology is a fun field of study, even if they overhaul the taxonomy literally every year. My Ornithology professor in college cool.
But realy, if you're going to study Ornithology, its best to do so via a different field, like ecology, management, and conservation biology, and specialize in the ornithology aspect of it, like the people who study game management and specialize in waterfowl.
Heck, Waterfowl research actually has a lot of money going into it and lots of amateur opportunity thanks to groups like Ducks Unlimited and the Audobon Society. If you get really good at identification, you can even volunteer at "wing-bees" too!

  10. this is the equivalent of my trying to become a psychiatrist. 4 years for a bachelor's, 4 years of med school, and 4 years residency. I spent 80% of my life in school. I am 18. I'm not spending 24 out of the 30 years I would be alive by then in school.
