You have to be Mentally Disturbed to be an Assassin

Pardon my lack of posting last week, I was getting lit in London (check Instagram for details) and I thought I would let the unity video do its thing since it blew up. While I was playing Origins (as one does), I started to think about how mentally disturbed you have to be if you were to actually be an Assassin. I donโ€™t just mean you have to be โ€œdesensitized to violenceโ€, thatโ€™s something weโ€™ve seen across all media and even we as audiences have normalized seeing violence. What Iโ€™m talking about is having some deep psychological disturbance as a prerequisite for being a member of the assassins. Living a life that revolves around murder is only a life that can be lived by those whose perception of reality and of people is rather animalistic, and deeply warped by trauma. AC origins for me deals with this idea the best, as we see Aya and Bayek have a very off-putting relationship with their targets and their tasks. They are often shown to have some spiritual trip every time they kill someone often โ€œtaking pleasure in itโ€ or โ€œwishing they could have been thereโ€ when they tell each other about their targets. Itโ€™s clear the death of their son left some deep psychological damage that has made them pretty mentally unstable, and this extremist way of dealing with it is what led to the foundation of the assassins, which is weird to think about.

Think about Bayek. He is the only character in this series (at the time of release) who has trippy memory corridors. Canonically, memory corridors are the animus focusing all its processing power in replaying as accurately as possible the memory of the assassin killing and interrogating a target. It is usually just the assassin and the target in a white room, with no fantastical elements. Now consider Bayek killing someone like Medunamun. To me, Bayek always enters a spiritual trance whenever he kills someone, and that is when he is most dangerous. He cannot distinguish reality from hallucinations, and it leads him to do some horrific stuff. When Bayek kills medunamun, the entire conversation is in his head. Medunamun is actually already dead, and the whole conversation of medunamun tormenting Bayek is just a hallucination triggered by the psychological overstimulation of taking the life of someone who was responsible for killing his son. This is why itโ€™s even more disturbing when Bayek beats medunamun with the apple of eden until his face is completely destroyed. Think about it, if medunamun was already dead, Bayek hallucinated that conversation, and it led him to scream while he bludgeons a dead corpse with a metal orb. Pretty messed up.

The whole of AC Origins shows the most extreme version of what I mean by the title, and I for one like it, because it gives a more realistic version of what men and women dedicated to murder would actually speak and act like. The life they lead takes its toll, and more likely, they are driven to choose this life from trauma that happened prior to joining the brotherhood.

Assassinโ€™s Creed Origins is a 2017 action role-playing video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It is the tenth major installment in the Assassinโ€™s Creed series, following 2015โ€™s Assassinโ€™s Creed Syndicate.

  1. To be fair most of the main assassins are usually mentally disturbed there lives got pretty fucked up from either the beginning or at some other point in their lives

  2. This outfit would be perfect it it had shoes, but on that note take the hood and symbol from this outfit and combine it with the protector outfit and I believe you'd have yourself a pretty sweet proto-assassin outfit

  3. Your description section made for a very interesting read. Iโ€™ll be honest, I donโ€™t think the Ubisoft creative team put anywhere near that much thought or complexity into the headspace of an assassin or the confessions. But, I really do like your personal thoughts, and agree with pretty much everything you said. I wish that was something expanded upon in a future game, but Ubisoft has never been one for such complexities or thought provoking themes.

  5. I've been watching your content for a while now, what you said in the description is what I can possibly find as borderline schizophrenic such as these 'memory corridors' or something like hallucinations. These things happen in real life if someone didn't get the help they need to recover from that traumatic phase in their life. One person experiencing that is horrible enough, I can't imagine two people, two parents, losing their kid and not getting justice done. Violence was their answer to the help they didn't get.

  6. Great work overall, but I think there's still room for improvements. Mostly the camera angles. It'd much more immersive with smooth camera work. Anyway keep at it. Good luck!

  7. I agree with the description. Iโ€™m currently replaying Origins and taking a new approach to the open world, my Bayek only kills his targets or if he gets into open combat when itโ€™s a necessity. When playing stealthily, I knock out guards and use sleep darts to not kill them for doing their job. When I killed Medunamun in the temple of Siwa, I waited until night so there are less guards patrolling and assassinated him whilst he was sleeping and left the temple undetected.

  9. In reply to your description, AC is just terrorists vs mason simulator. There are no heroes here. Both sides are extremist and are trying to play judge, jury and executioner.

The assassins are derived from a real group back during medieval times "Levantine assassins" or "Hashashin" and we see that clearly in AC 1
They were an extremist shia sect who assassinated certain key characters from both Arabs and crusaders and had the judge, jury, executioner sort of mindset and blind obedience to their leader as they thought of him as a medium to God and heaven. (The "Go to God" leap of faith in AC 1 is something they used to do except they didn't survive those leaps back then. It was to prove how obedient they are to their master as Al-Mualim pointed out, too)

On the other hand, the templars were based on the knight templars during that age who disbanded later and most of them became what was known as free masons and we can see this clearly in AC 3 when we saw the tunnels they built beneath the city. In the Desmond parts, its clear from what they do and how they speak that templars are illuminati.

So its pretty normal if they're mentally unstable.

A pity these 2 sort of groups tend to help each other rather than fight each other in real life.

You're right, and that's why I think we need a third faction; neither Assassins nor Templars are the good guys, or the bad guys. this third faction would be the closest one to be on the real good side, the real good guys, stable in their mind and uncorruptibles; they would fight the Assassins for the chaos they create and because they are murderers, and they would fight the templars because they want to break freedom
sorry if there are mistakes, greetings from France !
