  1. Acoustic amps did give amps away in fact they paid guys to use them. One band actually paid Andertons to gut them and put Marshalls in the cabs and the heads boxes. The best solid state amps made now are Orange because they make Class A/B amps not the cheesy digital Class D amps.
Transistor amps are not dynamically sensitive to your touch or clean up by pulling back your guitar volume. Add too that tubes constantly by the millisecond vary the voltage which creates endless variation that is perceived by ones ears as a richness. All this is why tube amps still exist. I have both amps but my solid state is a back up.
Modelling has all the same problem.

  2. It's an interesting topic.. I think there's a bunch of things at play. I play mostly tube amps, but i have a Peavey Artist 240, which is SS preamp, tube power amp, and the power section really seems to be the area that counts in terms of feel. Another big thing or me is, amps like the Roland Jazz Chorus don't sound like they're particularly "meant for guitar," like in comparison to classic guitar amps. It's like they put quarter inch inputs on a keyboard amp.. def is super well-made though.

  3. Dion and he band opened up for Tom Petty at the LA Forum. I know those guys very well and worked with Dion for several record labels. Anyway, the band told me petty and the heartbreakers had Roland 120's in vox cabinets.

  4. I've got a Fender Princeton Chorus solid state amp that I pulled out of someone's garage and paid them $20 for it. I'm a big fan. I wouldn't use it for overdriven sounds but for clean stuff it's fantastic. It's got a real spring reverb, analog stereo chorus, and a stereo effects loop. I liked it way more than I thought I would and at bedroom levels it sounds way better than any of my tube amps.

  5. Solid state has been trying to be tubes since they invented a transistor. They always fall alittle short, but they still sound good, I had a cheap fender with a good speaker it sounded amazing. But I take a cathode biased tube amp over ss any day. Just the feel is better.

  6. Hey y’all. I own tube amps and they’re awesome! But A couple of years ago a picked up a 50w VOX super beetle head using NU-TUBE tech etc. and run it through a 2×12 WGS g12c cabinet @ 4oms some times 16oms and Run the amp clean with ehx OD glove, earthquaker Cloven Hoof and Palisades in front it for 3 different amp drive tones. It’s awesome and it’s become my go to rig.
I love showing up with this and ppl are very entertained by its size and laugh!.. until they hear it.. lol. Then They all become very interested in my shit lol.
Also I run my bass through it too. impressive.

  7. Glad to hear the balance perspectives, especially with the thought …. "depends on what your needs are … what you're looking for". I've had both Tube and SS Amps throughout my years and yet, these past 8 or so, I've enjoyed great success with Quilter SS Amps — I can can not give them enough praise. I do, of course, use them very much as a pedal platform and otherwise play them clean. The built-in Limiter on the more advanced models (currently using the Aviator Mach III), does introduce the feeling of sag/touch of chewiness. The choice of selectable tone-stacks is icing on the cake, allowing me to enjoy tone tastings that draw inspiration from the classics (vox, fender, etc.). Did I mention … 20 lbs for a 200Watt Amp with 12" Speaker? Your back will thank you later 🙂

  8. Just my opinion, but to me, digital modeling + solid state is the future of the majority of amps. There were always be those who love tubes (I do), but modeling is the future. I think you can make a great solid state modeling amp, but it has a lot to do with the speaker and the cabinet, and that adds $$.

  9. I have a fender frontman 15g with a celestion speaker on it it's my first amp since i started learning guitar 12 years ago and i got recently a laney cub12r that is supposed the be a cheaper version of the fender blues jr and also has a celestion greenback on it and i keep using my fender frontman most of the time because it's just more convinient for me, i know very well that amp and i know how to get the sounds that i like plus it doesn't need to be cranked to sound good and for a bedroom player like me is pretty much a no brainer, i love tubes don't get me wrong but solid state isn't bad just different like you guys say

  10. IMO what makes a good solid state amp is an analog power section, so No class D. Full size components that can be worked on like and old tube amp. And for full boutique, bread boards and wires no PCB.

  11. I have both the red stripe and silver stripe 158 transtube peavey rage amps . I love them . My red stripe is is home so not sure if it's American Made or China made but it sounds just as good as my silver stripe . Both have the transtube with Blue Marvel Speaker . I'm happy with both . I do have a a fender front man pro but I only tend to use it with my Spectrum Strat knock off ( which, the spectrum, is now over 10 years old and sounds as good as day I got it new . It's been very well taken care of and except strings exactly the way it was delivered) . Anyway I have played through Marshall's but I'm not a shredder so unlike my teacher I just don't have a need for that extra reach Marshall's offer shredders compared to a slow hand like myself.

PS if you want to check out some of my music production feel free to criticize or compliment any of the music videos or songs on my page . Recently did an Amy Winehouse Tribute but NO ONE LIKE YOU is my best song and video in my opinion 🙃

  13. I think a lot of solid state amps sound great but some have a tone that seems muffled in a weird way that makes the tone cut like it is done with a butter knife. I've heard it with expensive and cheap ones. The tube amps I have seem to be more set it and forgrt it which may not seem adventurous but after playing so many amps I could never set up to please my ears it feels nice to know I can get at least one reliably good sound from those amps.

  14. The Katana is a digital preamp. Essentially a GT100 – which is why people can force it to use GT100 amp models. But Boss has let folks believe it's analog. The Katana is most definitely a digital modeller running into a solid state power amp.

  15. If you're lucky enough to find a Crate.. the made by SLM version. With the L series speakers. You have a fantastic amp. I had a 30 watt with two 8 inch . So good it was stolen. Definitely a go to amp. Made me not lug tubes around.

  16. I still use a Marshall Valvestate I got in the 90’s. It’s a hybrid (12ax7 preamp) and solid state power amp. The gain is terrible but it has one of the most flat clean channels I’ve used and is perfect for using pedals with it. Big fan of analog hybrid amps. Orange has been amazing over the past few years improving hybrid and full solid state amps over the last few decades too

  17. Hi Ryan, I can't believe you said you've never seen knobs like the ones on the white shredder guitar before? Looks exactly the same to me like the rhythm circuit knobs on JM and Jaguars (but then again, I might be completely wrong 😂). It really is pronounced 'Toaster' btw.
Also great topic with the solid states, I do love my Champion 100 but every now and then get the urge for a tube amp. However, when I play mine I'm usually more than happy 😊. All the best, Tommy

  18. Acoustic 134 for the win! Played hundreds of hardcore shows with that beast. Took the amp out of the combo for a MUCH easier time of setup. It’s the warmest , most consistent amp I’ve ever used.
Also, it will knock down walls when cranked.
